"Look, I'm sure the soft approach is great for fundamentals."

Amara's hands stopped.

Soft.

The word wasn't offensive.

The tone was.

"But competition is different."

"I know."

Mason smiled.

"Do you?"

Amara resumed stacking pads.

Trent said, "Maybe just roll."

Nora, walking from the office, immediately answered.

"No."

Mason looked toward her.

"Why not?"

"Because it's her first day."

"Exactly."

He pointed at Amara.

"If she's coaching competitors, people should know what she can do."

Amara looked at him.

"People?"

Mason hesitated.

"Students."

"Or you?"

Luke made a small sound.

Trent grinned.

Mason's smile disappeared.

"You think I'm threatened?"

"I don't know you well enough."

"Then roll."

Nora stepped forward.

"Mason."

Amara raised a hand.

"It's okay."

Nora looked at her.

Amara removed her sweatshirt.

Underneath was a plain black rash guard.

The room changed immediately.

Students who had been leaving slowed down.

Luke raised his phone.

Amara looked at him.

"If you record, record everything."

He nodded.

Mason stepped onto the mat.

"So one round?"

Amara shook her head.

"Three."

Trent laughed.

"You're calling three rounds on your first night?"

Amara pointed at Mason.

"One."

Then Trent.

"Two."

Then Luke.

"Three."

Luke lowered the phone slightly.

"You want all of us?"

"You're the ones with questions."

Nora closed her eyes.

"This is an awful idea."

Amara looked at the wall clock.

"One minute."

Mason laughed.

"For all three?"

"Yes."

The laughter spread.

Even some beginners smiled nervously.

Mason stepped forward.

"And if you don't submit all three in sixty seconds?"

Amara tied her braids tighter.

"Then you can keep doubting me."

"And if you do?"

She looked around the room.

"Then tomorrow we start acting like instructors instead of children."

Nobody laughed that time.

Nora sighed.

"Controlled submissions. No injuries. The second somebody taps, release."

Amara nodded.

Mason rolled his shoulders.

Trent stretched his neck.

Luke handed his phone to a student so the camera could keep running.

The timer was set.

Three black belts stood beside the mat.

One Black woman stood opposite them.

Students formed a loose circle.

Mason grinned.

"Ready?"

Amara raised her hands.

"Whenever you are."

The timer sounded.

And the first black belt came forward.

Mason expected Amara to engage like a jiu-jitsu specialist.

He was wrong before his first grip landed.

He reached for her collar line.

Amara changed levels.

Not dramatically.

Not explosively.

Her left hand controlled his wrist while her right connected behind his elbow.

She stepped outside his lead leg.

Mason attempted to square his hips.

Too late.

Amara redirected his weight, blocked the knee, and rotated.

He hit the mat on his side.

Seven seconds.

Mason recovered immediately.

Good athletes do.

He turned toward her legs and drove forward.

Amara allowed the entry.

That confused him.

He wrapped both arms around one leg.

She sprawled only halfway.

Then threaded her right arm beneath his neck.

Mason felt the trap.

Guillotine.

He changed direction.

Amara changed with him.

He attempted to roll through.

She followed.

Her hips settled.

Mason's face changed.

The choke tightened cleanly.

He tapped.

Seventeen seconds.

The room exploded.

Amara released him before the second tap finished.

She stood immediately.

No celebration.

No look at the audience.

"Next."

Trent's smile vanished.

Mason rolled away, coughing once.

Trent stepped forward at twenty-one seconds.

Unlike Mason, he did not underestimate her anymore.

That made him more dangerous.

Trent had wrestled in college.

He kept his stance low.

Hands active.

No reckless grab.

They circled.

Twenty-five seconds.

Trent shot for a double leg.

Amara sprawled hard.

He switched to a single.

She attacked the near arm.

Trent pulled free.

Good.

He rose.

Amara snapped his head.

Trent resisted.

She used the resistance.

One foot stepped deep between his.

Her hip turned.

Trent suddenly realized she had transitioned from grappling stance into a judo entry.

He attempted to widen his base.

Amara reaped his leg.

The room heard the impact.

She landed above him but did not pause.

Trent framed against her shoulder.

Amara isolated one arm.

He knew the armbar was coming and locked his hands.

She didn't fight the grip.

Instead she shifted her angle.

Her leg slid behind his shoulder.

Trent's neck became exposed.

He tried to turn toward her.

That gave her the position.

Her forearm entered beneath his chin.

Back control.

Seatbelt.

Hook.

Trent tapped before the choke fully closed.

Thirty-nine seconds.

This time nobody cheered immediately.

They were too surprised.

Amara released.

Stood.

"Luke."

Luke stared at the timer.

Twenty-one seconds remained.

He was the lightest of the three and arguably the quickest.

He also knew exactly what had happened to the others.

He stepped onto the mat.

"No pressure."

Amara almost smiled.

"None."

Timer running.

Forty-two seconds.

Luke did something smart.

He refused to engage.

He circled backward.

The students laughed.

"Come on, Luke!"

He ignored them.

If he survived eighteen seconds, technically Amara failed.

Amara understood immediately.

She advanced.

Luke retreated.

Forty-seven.

Forty-eight.

He reached the edge.

Amara feinted a shot.

Luke sprawled instinctively.

She never touched his legs.

Instead she caught his wrist.

Pulled.

Luke recovered.

Fifty-one.

Amara stepped past him.

Luke turned to follow.

That was the mistake.

She trapped his arm as he rotated.

A two-on-one grip.

Her shoulder pressed into his.

Luke tried to pull free.

Amara dropped under the arm.

For a fraction of a second, nobody understood the position.

Then Luke's elbow straightened across her hip line.

Standing arm lock.

He froze.

Fifty-six.

Amara applied exactly enough pressure.

Luke tapped.

The clock read:

00:58.

For two full seconds, Iron Harbor Jiu-Jitsu was completely silent.

Then someone screamed.

Not in fear.

In celebration.

The beginners erupted.

Trent lay on his back staring at the ceiling.

Mason sat near the wall.

Luke rubbed his arm and shook his head.

Nora covered her mouth, either trying not to laugh or trying not to swear.

The student holding Luke's phone looked down at the recording as though the device had captured a UFO landing.

Amara walked toward her sweatshirt.

Mason stood.

"Wait."

She turned.

His face was red.

"Again."

Nora immediately said:

"No."

Mason ignored her.

"You caught me cold."

Amara stared.

Trent sat up.

"Mason."

"No."

He pointed at Amara.

"Seventeen seconds doesn't mean anything."

Amara folded her sweatshirt.

"You're correct."

That stopped him.

"What?"

"One roll doesn't define your ability."

Mason's anger stalled.

Amara continued.

"You're obviously skilled."

He didn't know what to do with the compliment.

"But you entered expecting me to be bad."

She nodded toward the mat.

"You didn't lose because I'm magical. You made a stupid decision."

A few students tried not to laugh.

Mason glared.

Amara looked at Trent.

"You adjusted faster."

Then Luke.

"You tried to exploit the clock."

Luke smiled reluctantly.

"Almost worked."

"Almost."

She picked up her bag.

Mason said:

"Who are you?"

Amara stopped.

Nora answered for her.

"Someone you could've asked about before deciding she didn't belong here."

Mason looked at Nora.

"You knew she was this good."

"Yes."

"And didn't tell us."

"Why would I?"

"Because—"

Nora waited.

Mason had no good answer.

Amara sat on the bench and began changing shoes.

Luke retrieved his phone.

The recording showed everything.

No edits.

No missing beginning.

No dramatic setup required.

Three black belts.

One minute.

Three taps.

He stared at it.

"This is going to explode."

Amara looked up.

"No."

Luke blinked.

"What?"

"Don't post it."

"You can't be serious."

"I am."

"That is the best video I've ever recorded."

"Congratulations. Keep it."

Mason laughed bitterly.

"Now she doesn't want people to see."

Amara looked at him.

"I didn't do it for people."

"Then why do it?"

"Because you were turning your insecurity into a workplace problem."

The room went quiet again.

Mason stepped forward.

"Insecurity?"

"Yes."

"You don't know anything about me."

"Correct."

She zipped her bag.

"So I'm judging your behavior instead."

She stood.

"You questioned Nora's decision in front of students. You questioned my rank because you didn't recognize me. Then you turned a professional disagreement into a physical test."

Mason's jaw tightened.

Amara continued.

"I agreed because sometimes the fastest way to remove a stupid question is to answer it."

Nora looked at Mason.

"She's not wrong."

Luke still held the phone.

"What if I just send it to the gym group?"

"No."

"Why?"

Amara looked around at the beginners.

Because she knew what would happen.

The story would become simple.

Three arrogant men humiliated.

One mysterious woman revealed as a monster.

Millions of views.

Comments.

Memes.

People choosing heroes and villains after sixty seconds of footage.

Nobody would care about Tessa learning to breathe beneath pressure.

Nobody would care whether the gym became better.

They would care about the fall.

The taps.

The spectacle.
