Laughter.

Naomi stopped moving.

Marcus looked toward her.

"A lot of people asked whether it was real."

He stepped onto the center mat.

"So I figured today we'd answer."

Raymond reached for the microphone.

Marcus moved away.

"Naomi Reed. One round. Competition rules."

The crowd murmured.

Naomi remained still.

Marcus smiled.

"Unless you're not interested when people are actually watching."

There it was.

Not a challenge.

A trap.

If Naomi refused, Marcus could call her afraid.

If she accepted, he would turn the gym into a spectacle.

Naomi walked toward him.

The crowd grew louder.

Marcus smiled wider.

She stopped two feet away.

Then she took the microphone from his hand.

The room quieted.

Naomi looked at the audience.

"I came here to train."

Her voice was steady.

"I started teaching because people asked for help."

She looked at Marcus.

"I don't owe anybody a fight."

The silence became uncomfortable.

Marcus whispered:

"Scared?"

Naomi heard him.

So did the microphone.

Several people reacted.

Naomi looked at him.

"No."

She handed the microphone to Raymond.

Then returned to her students.

Marcus stood alone at center mat.

For the first time, the crowd seemed embarrassed for him.

That should have ended his obsession.

Instead, it broke something.

Three nights later, seventeen-year-old Jordan Price came to Naomi's class with his right elbow wrapped.

He normally trained under Marcus.

Naomi noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Jordan shrugged.

"Nothing."

"That's a lot of bandage for nothing."

He looked toward the main mat.

Marcus was coaching.

"Training."

Naomi waited.

Jordan lowered his voice.

"He got mad."

"Who?"

Jordan didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

"What happened?"

"We were rolling."

"And?"

"I caught him in something."

Naomi's expression changed.

"What?"

"Armbar."

"You submitted Marcus?"

"No."

Jordan hesitated.

"Almost."

Naomi understood.

"What happened after?"

"He went harder."

"How hard?"

Jordan looked down.

"I tapped."

Naomi became still.

"And he didn't stop?"

Jordan's eyes filled.

"Not right away."

Naomi's stomach tightened.

"How long?"

"I don't know. Couple seconds."

Those seconds mattered.

In grappling, tapping was the line.

The entire sport depended on trust.

Pressure could be intense.

Pain could be real.

But when somebody tapped, you stopped.

Immediately.

Without debate.

Naomi walked toward Raymond.

Marcus saw her coming.

"So now you're recruiting my students?"

Naomi ignored him.

"Raymond."

Raymond came over.

Naomi pointed at Jordan.

"Look at his elbow."

Marcus's face changed.

"Don't start."

Raymond removed the wrap carefully.

Swelling surrounded the joint.

He looked at Jordan.

"Hospital?"

"My mom took me."

"Diagnosis?"

"Sprain. Maybe ligament damage."

Raymond looked at Marcus.

"Office."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"It was training."

"Office."

"No."

The gym became quiet.

Raymond's voice hardened.

"Marcus."

Jordan spoke.

"I tapped."

Marcus looked at him.

"Don't exaggerate."

Naomi stepped between them.

Marcus laughed.

"What?"

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Talk to him like that."

Marcus leaned closer.

"You think you're running this place now?"

"No."

"Because you got lucky once?"

Naomi stared at him.

"This isn't about me."

"It's always about you now."

Raymond moved between them.

"Enough."

He suspended Marcus immediately.

One week pending review.

Marcus grabbed his bag.

Before leaving, he looked at Jordan.

"You just ruined your own career."

Jordan flinched.

Naomi saw it.

So did Raymond.

The door slammed.

Nobody spoke.

That evening, Naomi sat beside Jordan outside the gym.

"You didn't ruin anything."

Jordan nodded but didn't look convinced.

"He knows tournament organizers."

"Maybe."

"He knows coaches."

"Probably."

Jordan swallowed.

"What if nobody wants me?"

Naomi thought of Lena.

What happens when people believe authority is more important than safety?

She leaned forward.

"Anybody who punishes you for saying you tapped is not someone you need coaching you."

Jordan finally looked at her.

"What if he's telling everyone I'm soft?"

Naomi smiled sadly.

"Then he's telling on himself."

The security camera covering the main mat had stopped recording during Jordan's round.

Raymond discovered it the following morning.

"Coincidence?" Naomi asked.

"I don't believe in that many coincidences."

The system showed manual interruption.

Someone with administrator access had disabled the camera for eleven minutes.

Marcus had access.

So did Raymond and two managers.

Trevor denied touching it.

Eli asked Raymond for a private conversation.

Naomi wasn't present.

But afterward, Raymond called her.

"Eli saw the round."

Naomi sat straighter.

"And?"

"He confirms Jordan tapped."

"Will he say that publicly?"

"Yes."

That surprised her.

Eli had spent weeks staying out of everything.

Apparently neutrality had limits.

Raymond scheduled a disciplinary meeting.

Marcus didn't attend.

Instead his attorney sent a letter.

Wrongful suspension.

Defamation.

Damage to professional reputation.

Raymond laughed when he read it.

Then stopped laughing when two sponsors called.

Both wanted "clarification."

One temporarily paused its contract.

Marcus had influence.

More than Raymond realized.

Two days later, edited footage appeared online.

It showed Jordan attacking aggressively.

Then Marcus controlling him.

The clip ended before the injury.

Caption:

Young competitor lies after losing training round.

Naomi watched the video.

"Who posted it?"

"Anonymous account."

Raymond looked exhausted.

"But somebody had footage."

Naomi rewound.

The camera angle was low.

From the far corner.

Not security camera.

Phone.

She zoomed in on a reflection in the wall mirror.

Trevor.

Holding his phone.

Naomi looked at Raymond.

"He filmed it."

Raymond called Trevor.

No answer.

That night Trevor appeared at the gym.

He looked terrible.

Unshaven.

Eyes red.

He asked to speak privately.

Naomi joined Raymond in the office.

Trevor closed the door.

"I posted the clip."

Raymond's jaw tightened.

"I know."

"Marcus told me to."

"Why?"

Trevor stared at the floor.

"Because he said Jordan was going to destroy us."

Naomi spoke.

"Us?"

"The team. Sponsors. Everything."

"You know Jordan tapped."

Trevor's silence answered.

Raymond leaned forward.

"Did Marcus ignore it intentionally?"

Trevor whispered:

"Yes."

"Why?"

"He wanted to teach him a lesson."

Naomi felt anger rise.

Not explosive anger.
