“Your father had another son?”

Samuel's voice was quiet.

“He sent me away before he died.”

Ethan could barely speak.

“Why?”

“To keep me alive.”

Mara stepped back.

Suddenly the story became larger.

Ethan had spent eight years believing he had been alone.

He wasn't.

His father had left him a brother.

A secret.

And a war.

That afternoon, Judge Holloway arrived with twenty armed men.

The town square emptied.

Holloway stepped from his carriage.

“Ethan Cole.”

Ethan stood in the street.

“You killed my father.”

Holloway smiled.

“Your father killed himself.”

“That's a lie.”

“You have no proof.”

Mara stepped beside Ethan.

“I do.”

Holloway's expression changed.

“Marshal Voss.”

“You're under arrest.”

The judge laughed.

“On whose authority?”

Mara pulled the silver badge from inside her coat.

“Mine.”

The judge looked around.

Nobody moved.

Then Sheriff Crane appeared.

His uniform was torn.

Blood covered his forehead.

But his badge was still there.

He stood beside Mara.

“Mine too.”

Holloway's smile disappeared.

Then gunfire erupted from the rooftops.

The town exploded into chaos.

Ethan dragged Samuel behind a wagon.

Mara fired toward the courthouse.

Crane returned fire.

The battle lasted minutes.

But it felt like hours.

When the smoke cleared, Blackstone's men had fled.

Judge Holloway was on his knees.

Mara placed him in handcuffs.

He looked at Ethan.

“You think this changes anything?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“No.”

He looked at the documents.

“It changes everything.”

 The Last Ride of Blackstone

Blackstone's owner, Silas Black, escaped before the arrests.

He took the remaining records and fled toward the border.

Ethan, Mara, Crane, and several deputies followed.

They rode for two days.

At dawn on the third day, they reached the canyon.

Black's men waited.

There were twelve of them.

Silas Black stood in front.

“You should have stayed home, Cole.”

Ethan dismounted.

“My father deserved better.”

Silas laughed.

“Your father was a fool.”

Mara raised her rifle.

Silas smiled.

“You're still wearing that badge.”

“Yes.”

“You know what badges mean out here?”

Mara's eyes hardened.

“They mean someone is responsible.”

Silas drew.

The canyon erupted.

Ethan moved behind a rock.

Crane fired from the ridge.

Mara shot two riders.

Samuel stayed hidden.

One by one, Black's men fell or fled.

Silas ran.

Ethan followed.

They reached the edge of a cliff.

Silas turned.

“You think killing me will bring your father back?”

“No.”

Ethan lowered his gun.

“That's why I'm not going to kill you.”

Silas laughed.

Then he lunged.

Ethan struck him down.

Mara arrived seconds later.

She placed cuffs around Silas's wrists.

“You're going to court.”

Silas spat blood.

“I own judges.”

“Not anymore.”

Mara looked toward the horizon.

For the first time, the sun was rising over land that no longer belonged to fear.

 The Gate

Three months later, the valley changed.

Blackstone's properties were seized.

The fraudulent deeds were overturned.

Judge Holloway went to prison.

Several officials testified.

Sheriff Crane kept his badge.

Thomas Bell published every document.

And Ethan Cole rebuilt his ranch.

He repaired the fences.

Repainted the barn.

Planted new trees.

His brother Samuel stayed.

For the first time, Ethan's house no longer felt empty.

But there was one thing missing.

Mara Voss.

She had left without saying goodbye.
