A business magazine in the barbershop near his apartment.

A woman standing beside a photograph of skyscrapers and shipping containers.

The headline had included a name.

Caldwell.

Daniel's heart began to pound.

He looked at Maya.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at Maya.

He knew who she was.

He just couldn't understand why she was letting them continue.

Then Vanessa raised her voice.

"Security!"

And the ballroom went silent.

The Game They Thought They Were Playing

Security did not arrive immediately.

That made Vanessa angry.

She looked toward the entrance.

"Where are they?"

No one answered.

The string quartet continued playing.

But the music suddenly felt absurd.

The violinists had noticed the disturbance.

One of them looked toward the crowd.

A few guests were already holding up phones.

Maya could see small red recording lights.

She wasn't surprised.

People loved watching powerful people fall.

They loved it even more when they thought the fall belonged to someone else.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"This is ridiculous."

Maya looked at her.

"Is it?"

"You are deliberately creating a scene."

"No."

"You refuse to identify yourself."

"I haven't refused."

"You won't show me your invitation."

"I haven't been asked by the event staff."

"I am the event staff."

Maya's eyebrows lifted slightly.

"Are you?"

Vanessa hesitated.

It was a small hesitation.

But several people noticed.

Richard stepped in.

"My wife is on the planning committee."

Maya nodded.

"That's different."

"How?"

"Being on a committee doesn't make you the owner of the guest list."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Do you have any idea who you're talking to?"

Maya almost laughed.

Instead, she took another sip of champagne.

Jordan leaned toward her.

"Still calm?"

"Very."

"I don't know how you do it."

"I've had practice."

Across the room, Daniel had placed his tray on a table.

His hands were shaking.

He whispered to another waiter.

"That's Maya Caldwell."

The other waiter frowned.

"Who?"

"Caldwell Global."

The waiter stared at him.

"You sure?"

Daniel nodded.

"I've seen her."

"Then why isn't she saying anything?"

Daniel looked back.

"I don't know."

Maybe that was the point.

Maya had learned that people often revealed their values when they believed consequences did not exist.

She wanted to know exactly how far Vanessa would go.

And Vanessa was more than willing to show her.

"You know what?" Vanessa said.

She looked at Richard.

"I think she's enjoying this."

Richard laughed.

"Some people like attention."

Vanessa turned to Maya.

"You came here dressed like that, didn't you?"

Maya looked down at her white gown.

"Like what?"

"Like you expect everyone to make room."

Maya's voice remained soft.

"I don't expect anything."

"Then maybe you should leave."

Maya didn't respond.

Vanessa smiled.

"There it is."

She looked around.

"She's refusing."

A guest near the bar murmured, "This is getting uncomfortable."

Another replied, "Then don't watch."

But neither looked away.

Vanessa raised her glass.

"Every year there's someone who sneaks in."

Richard chuckled.

"Free champagne."

That earned a few laughs.

Maya's expression didn't change.

Vanessa continued.

"Maybe next year they should check invitations at the door."

A woman nearby whispered, "This is a charity gala."

Her companion replied, "Exactly."

Neither sounded supportive of Vanessa anymore.

Vanessa noticed.

Her smile became tighter.

"You know what I find interesting?" she said to Maya.

Maya waited.

"You don't seem embarrassed."

"No."

"Why?"

Maya looked at her.

"Because you haven't given me a reason to be."

That silenced the people closest to them.

Jordan's eyes softened.

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

Richard stepped closer.

"Enough."

His voice was no longer amused.

"Show your invitation."

Maya held his gaze.

"Ask the organizers."

"We are the organizers."

"Then ask them."

Richard looked toward the stage.

Charles Denton stood there.

Charles was the event chair.

He had been watching the entire exchange.

He was a tall man in his early sixties, with silver hair and an expensive velvet dinner jacket.

He was accustomed to being obeyed.

He stepped away from the stage.

The crowd parted.

Vanessa smiled when she saw him coming.

"Charles."

Charles nodded.

"What seems to be the problem?"

Vanessa gestured toward Maya.

"She refuses to prove she's a guest."

Charles looked at Maya.

He didn't ask her name.

He didn't ask whether there had been a misunderstanding.

He simply looked at her dress, her face, and Jordan standing beside her.

Then he said:

"Ma'am, may I see your invitation?"

Maya's silence lasted several seconds.

Charles frowned.

"Please."

Maya finally spoke.

"I believe you should first ask yourself why you're asking."

Charles's expression hardened.

"This is a private event."

"I know."

"Only verified guests are permitted."

"I know."

"Then show your invitation."

Maya tilted her head.

"Do you know who invited me?"

Charles sighed.

"That's irrelevant."

"Is it?"

"Yes."

Maya nodded.

"Interesting."

Charles took another step.

"I don't know how you entered this room, but you're disrupting the evening."

Vanessa smiled.

"Thank you."

Charles ignored her.

"Security will escort you out if you refuse to cooperate."

Jordan moved slightly.

Maya touched his sleeve.

He stopped.

Charles noticed.

He mistook the gesture for weakness.

That would become one of his biggest mistakes.

"Your invitation," he repeated.

Maya didn't reach into her purse.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't insult him.

She simply looked at him.

"I don't think you understand what you're doing."

Charles laughed once.

"Believe me, I understand perfectly."

"No."

Maya's voice was almost gentle.

"You don't."

A murmur passed through the crowd.

Charles's jaw tightened.

"Then enlighten me."

Maya looked around the ballroom.

At the chandeliers.

The tables.

The stage.

The banners.

The enormous screens displaying the charity's logo.

Then she looked back at Charles.

"Not yet."

Vanessa scoffed.

"Not yet?"

Maya nodded.

"Not yet."

Charles's face reddened.

"I've had enough."

He turned toward a nearby staff member.

"Take her glass."

The young attendant froze.

He looked at Maya.

Then at Charles.

Then at the broken line of authority between them.

Charles snapped.

"Did you hear me?"

The attendant stepped forward.

Maya gave him a small smile.

"It's all right."

He stopped.

Charles reached toward the champagne flute himself.

His fingers closed around the stem.

Maya didn't release it.

For a moment, they stood that way.

Two hands.

One glass.

The room held its breath.

Charles pulled.

The crystal snapped.

The glass shattered across the marble.

A piece cut Maya's palm.

A thin line of blood appeared.

Champagne splashed across the lower half of her white gown.

Gasps erupted.

Jordan immediately stepped forward.

Maya stopped him.

"Jordan."

He looked at her.
