"Those aren't the same thing."
Aaron's cheeks reddened.
"I don't need an audience."
"Then ask me after everyone leaves."
That surprised him.
Daniel watched.
Aaron had a choice.
He could agree.
Or admit that the spectacle mattered.
After a long pause, he said:
"Fine."
Naomi nodded.
"Fine."
Aaron walked away.
Grace whispered, "You're actually going to roll with him?"
Naomi drank water.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because now it's not a performance."
But the plan lasted less than ten minutes.
One of Aaron's friends had already posted online:
UNDEFEATED FORMER CHAMPION AT WESTGATE TONIGHT. AARON PIKE VS NAOMI BROOKS?
Phones began buzzing.
People searched her name.
Whispers spread.
Aaron checked his screen.
Then looked across the room.
His face changed.
Thirty-seven and zero.
National titles.
International wins.
A photograph of Naomi standing on a podium.
Suddenly the quiet visitor became the most accomplished grappler in the building.
Aaron stared at her.
Naomi knew immediately.
"You found Google."
He walked toward her.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"You didn't ask the right questions."
"You said you competed sometimes."
"I did."
"You were undefeated."
"Correct."
"You made me look stupid."
Naomi stared at him.
"No."
She paused.
"You handled that yourself."
The words landed harder than any throw could have.
Aaron's jaw tightened.
"One round."
Naomi stood.
This time she said yes.
Daniel stopped them before they entered the center mat.
"Rules."
Aaron crossed his arms.
"We know the rules."
"I'm saying them anyway."
Submission grappling.
Five minutes.
No slams.
No twisting leg locks.
Immediate release on tap.
Both nodded.
Daniel looked at Naomi.
"You sure?"
"Yes."
Then Aaron.
"You?"
Aaron laughed.
"Absolutely."
But his breathing had already changed.
The room formed a wide circle.
Phones appeared.
Naomi noticed.
"Put them away."
Several students hesitated.
Aaron said, "Why?"
"Because this is training."
He smiled.
"Afraid of losing on camera?"
Naomi looked toward Daniel.
Daniel understood.
"Phones away."
A few people complained.
Daniel repeated it more loudly.
"No filming."
The room complied.
Aaron rolled his shoulders.
Naomi tied her hair tighter.
They shook hands.
Daniel started the timer.
Aaron attacked immediately.
Collar tie.
Underhook.
Pressure.
He was powerful.
Far more powerful than Naomi.
His wrestling background showed immediately.
He drove her backward.
Naomi gave ground.
Aaron smiled.
Someone whispered, "Whoa."
He attempted an outside trip.
Naomi recovered.
Shot for her legs.
She sprawled.
Aaron came up.
Still attacking.
First minute.
No score.
No submission.
But Aaron appeared dominant.
Then Naomi changed tempo.
Small grip.
Small angle.
One step.
Aaron's weight shifted.
Naomi swept him.
Not dramatically.
He simply went from standing to sitting before he understood what happened.
A few people inhaled sharply.
Aaron scrambled.
Naomi allowed space.
He stood.
Second exchange.
He gripped harder.
She redirected.
Another off-balance.
This time Aaron refused to fall.
He muscled through.
Naomi stepped around him.
Back control.
He peeled one hook.
She transitioned.
Arm.
Aaron pulled free.
For the first time, irritation appeared on his face.
He attacked more aggressively.
Naomi remained calm.
Three minutes.
Aaron forced her against the padded wall.
Daniel considered resetting them.
Naomi escaped first.
Aaron chased.
Naomi caught his arm.
He pulled.
She switched directions.
Suddenly Aaron was on his back.
Naomi controlled his shoulder.
An armbar was available.
She did not take it.
Instead she released and stood.
Aaron stared up at her.
"Why'd you stop?"
"You were turning wrong."
"What?"
"Your shoulder."
"I'm fine."
"You weren't."
He stood angrily.
"I didn't tap."
"I know."
"Then don't stop."
Naomi's expression changed.
For the first time, the softness left her face.
"This is training."
"So train."
"I am."
Daniel watched Aaron carefully.
The round restarted.
Aaron charged.
Naomi caught him in a triangle choke twenty seconds later.
He tried to stack.
She adjusted.
His face reddened.
Daniel watched his hand.
Tap.
Once.
Quiet.
Naomi released instantly.
The room was silent.
Aaron sat upright.
No applause.
No humiliation.
Just silence.
Naomi stood and offered her hand.
He ignored it.
The timer still showed forty-eight seconds.
Aaron stared at Daniel.
"Again."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Aaron looked at Naomi.
"Again."
She shook her head too.
"Round's over."
"You got lucky."
Someone behind them inhaled sharply.
Naomi looked almost sad.
"That's exactly why we shouldn't do another."
She walked away.
The match itself had lasted less than five minutes.
The consequences would last much longer.
By Friday morning, Aaron had convinced himself Naomi had embarrassed him intentionally.
He replayed the round in his head.
She had hidden her identity.
Refused him twice.
Called him out in front of everyone.
Then submitted him.
He ignored all the moments when she had tried to avoid the confrontation.
Pride is selective that way.
He texted Daniel.
SHE CAME THERE TO MAKE A POINT.
Daniel answered:
SHE CAME TO WATCH HER NIECE.
Aaron stared at the message.
Then typed:
WHAT?
Daniel told him.
Maya.
Youth class.
Bathroom.
Wanting to quit.
Aaron's anger weakened.
He remembered the girl.
Small.
Quiet.
He had corrected her during wrestling drills.
He had called her delicate.
He hadn't meant anything cruel.
At least, that was what he told himself.
He drove to Westgate early.
Daniel was alone.
"You could've told me."
Daniel looked up from paperwork.
"Told you what?"
"About Maya."
"I only learned yesterday."
Aaron paced.
"I was trying to help her."
"Did she ask?"
"She's a kid."
"That isn't an answer."
Aaron sighed.
"You know how many soft kids come in here?"
Daniel's face hardened.
"Careful."
"I'm serious. They need confidence."
"And humiliating them gives them confidence?"
