The snow was falling significantly heavier now. It had transitioned from a dry powder to thick, wet, heavy flakes that plastered themselves aggressively against the massive, flat windshield, fighting the heavy-duty wipers that groaned in protest with every swipe.
Arthur drove with a mechanical, flawless, terrifying focus. He didn't just react to the road; he anticipated it. He felt the microscopic loss of traction in the dual rear wheels before the bus even began to slide. He feathered the air brakes with microscopic twitches of his heavy boots, steering into the imperceptible slides with the raw intuition of a man who had driven heavy, armored vehicles in environments far more hostile, explosive, and deadly than a Colorado blizzard.
In the back of the bus, the atmosphere was deteriorating. Trent and his crew were growing restless.
The quiet, seemingly pathetic submission of the driver hadn’t satisfied Trent’s massive ego; it had only emboldened him. It had given him a taste of absolute power in a confined space. He was a predator who had stumbled into an enclosed environment with absolutely no resistance, and he was getting bored. He needed a reaction. He needed to dominate someone else.
Directly across the narrow aisle from where Trent was aggressively sprawling sat a young woman. She looked to be about nineteen years old, wearing the thick, insulated maroon uniform jacket of the Heavenly Peaks Ski Resort. She was small, exhausted, and had her white wired headphones firmly in her ears, staring fixedly out the dark, snow-battered window into the abyss of the canyon. She was clearly, desperately trying to avoid acknowledging the boisterous, intimidating group of fighters occupying her space.
Trent noticed her. A cruel, predatory smile spread across his bruised face.
“Hey!” Trent called out to her. He extended his heavy boot, kicking the hard plastic siding of her seat with a sharp thwack. “Hey, sweetheart. Look at me when I'm talking.”
The young woman—whose name tag read Maya—stiffened. She kept her gaze absolutely rigidly fixed on the dark, snowy glass of the window, praying that if she ignored him, he would lose interest like a bored child.
“Are you deaf?” Trent barked, his voice echoing loudly over the rumble of the diesel engine.
When she didn't turn, Trent’s patience evaporated. He leaned forward across the aisle, his massive arm shooting out. He didn't tap her shoulder. He grabbed the white wire of her headphones and violently yanked it downward, ripping the earbuds out of her ears and pulling the phone right out of her lap, sending it clattering to the rubber floor.
Maya gasped, a sharp intake of breath. She turned to him, her eyes wide, terrified, and welling with sudden tears. She instinctively pulled her knees to her chest, shrinking away from him.
“Please,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Just leave me alone.”
“I’m just making conversation, babe,” Trent smiled, the predatory gleam in his eyes intensifying. He loved the fear. It fed him. He stood up slowly, using his height to completely tower over her small frame in the cramped seat. He placed one massive, tattooed hand heavily on the top of the seat directly behind hers, and his other hand on the headrest of the seat directly in front of her.
He leaned in close, effectively trapping her inside a cage made of his own muscular arms. She was pinned against the freezing window.
“You work up at the lodge, right?” Trent said, his voice dropping into a mocking, mock-intimate purr. “I bet you’re used to serving guys all day. Bringing them drinks, taking their boots. Well, I’m telling you right now, you need to serve me some attention. I don't like being ignored.”
Behind him, Greg and Cody chuckled darkly, feeding off their leader's intimidation tactics. Liam sat back with his arms crossed, watching the show with a detached, cruel amusement. The rest of the passengers on the bus were entirely frozen. They were held hostage not by weapons, but by the overwhelming, suffocating threat of explosive physical violence. No one dared to intervene. No one wanted to become the target of four highly trained, aggressive cage fighters in a moving metal tube on the edge of a cliff. Mrs. Higgins closed her eyes and began to silently pray.
Up at the very front of the bus, isolated in his driver's seat, Arthur’s eyes flicked upward to the massive, rectangular panoramic rearview mirror bolted above the windshield.
Through the reflection, he saw the entire tableau. He saw the young girl’s pale, terrified face, trapped against the glass. He saw the aggressive, dominating posture of Trent Lawson’s back. He saw the smirking faces of the three accomplices.
