Claire stood.

She removed her sweatshirt.

The room became quieter.

She was smaller than Derek by a considerable margin.

No one doubted that.

Derek bounced lightly on his feet.

Claire simply stood.

“Ready?” he asked.

“Yes.”

The timer started.

Derek moved first.

He reached for a collar tie.

Claire slipped outside.

He grabbed again.

She moved.

Nothing dramatic.

No attack.

No counter.

Just distance.

Derek smiled.

“Good footwork.”

Claire said nothing.

He shot for a takedown.

Claire sprawled lightly.

Derek changed direction.

She pivoted.

He tried to establish a grip.

She broke it.

Again.

Again.

Derek's smile began to disappear.

She wasn't stronger.

She wasn't faster.

She was simply never where he expected her to be.

Derek increased his pace.

Claire immediately increased hers.

He shot again.

She redirected.

He stumbled half a step.

The room grew quieter.

Derek recovered.

He attacked harder.

Claire stepped aside.

He turned.

She was already behind him.

She didn't take his back.

She simply touched his shoulder.

“Your balance.”

Derek spun.

“What?”

“You're leaning.”

He attacked again.

This time Claire allowed the entry.

For a fraction of a second, Derek thought he had her.

Then everything changed.

Claire shifted her weight.

Her foot moved.

Her hip turned.

Derek's momentum continued forward.

His own force became the weapon against him.

The world tilted.

His feet disappeared.

The ceiling rushed toward him.

Then—

THUD.

His back hit the mat.

The air left his lungs.

The gym went silent.

Claire followed him down under complete control.

One hand rested on his shoulder.

She didn't strike.

She didn't squeeze.

She didn't humiliate him.

She simply looked at him.

“Are we done?”

Derek stared at her.

He couldn't answer.

For several seconds, all he could hear was his own breathing.

Then someone whispered:

“Holy—”

Mike said:

“Quiet.”

Claire stood and offered Derek her hand.

He stared at it.

Then took it.

She pulled him up.

Derek looked around.

Nobody was laughing.

Nobody was cheering.

That somehow hurt more than losing.

Because everyone had seen what happened.

There was no excuse.

No lucky submission.

No freak accident.

He had attacked.

She had redirected.

His own momentum had put him on the mat.

Derek looked at Claire.

“How?”

She shook her head.

“That's the wrong question.”

“Then what's the right one?”

“Why did you need to prove you were stronger?”

Derek had no answer.

Claire picked up her sweatshirt.

The round had lasted less than thirty seconds.

But it had changed something in him.

What the Black Belt Couldn't See

Derek left the mat.

Brandon approached carefully.

“You okay?”

Derek stared at him.

“Delete the video.”

Brandon blinked.

“What?”

“The video.”

“You want me to—”

“Delete it.”

Brandon hesitated.

Then nodded.

Derek sat against the wall.

Mike came over.

For a while, he said nothing.

Finally Derek asked:

“Who is she?”

Mike looked at him.

“You're finally asking the right question.”

Derek frowned.

“Seriously.”

Mike sat beside him.

“Claire trained here years ago.”

“How long?”

“Before you.”

“Black belt?”

Mike nodded.

Derek looked surprised.

“In what?”

“More than one discipline.”

Derek waited.

Mike continued.

“She competed when she was younger.”

“How good?”

Mike smiled faintly.

“Good enough that people remembered her.”

Derek looked toward Claire.

She was speaking quietly with Sophie.

“She doesn't look like a competitor.”

“She doesn't want to.”

“Why?”

Mike was silent.

Then:

“Because she learned something most fighters learn too late.”

“What?”

“That fighting isn't the same thing as proving yourself.”

Derek looked down.

Mike continued.

“Claire was one of the most talented athletes I ever trained.”

“What happened?”

“An injury.”

Derek glanced at her right hip.

Mike nodded.

“That's part of it.”

“Then why does she still move like that?”

“Because injuries take away options. They don't erase experience.”

Derek absorbed that.

Mike leaned forward.

“You want to know why she beat you?”

Derek nodded.

“You attacked with your ego before you attacked with your body.”

Derek frowned.

Mike continued.

“You decided she was weak before you touched her. You decided the outcome before the round started. Once you did that, every movement you made had an answer.”

Derek said nothing.

“You thought you were hunting her.”

Mike looked directly at him.

“She was studying you.”

That sentence stayed with Derek.

Later that night, after most people had left, Derek found Claire near the front entrance.

“Claire.”

She turned.

“Yeah?”

“I want to ask you something.”

“Okay.”

“How did you know?”

“Know what?”

“That I was going to fall.”

Claire smiled.

“I didn't.”

Derek frowned.

“You did.”

“No.”

She adjusted the strap of her bag.

“I knew what you were trying to do.”

“And?”

“You gave me everything I needed.”

Derek thought about it.

She continued.

“You were bigger. Stronger. More experienced in certain positions.”

Derek almost smiled.

“Certain positions?”

“Yes.”

“What are you saying?”

“That you are very good.”

He hadn't expected that.
