Then stepped into the aisle.
Slowly.
He stopped ten feet away.
"Son."
Ethan looked over.
Arthur's voice remained quiet.
"Let the young lady go."
Ethan stared at the old man.
"We're fine."
Arthur looked at Claire.
"Ma'am, did you ask him to touch you?"
She shook her head.
"No."
Arthur looked back at Ethan.
"Then you're not fine."
Ethan laughed.
"You her grandfather?"
"No."
"Then mind your business."
Arthur nodded.
"I was."
He took another step.
"Until she said no and you decided yours mattered more."
Ethan's smile vanished.
Ethan loosened the hold slightly.
Claire tried moving forward.
His arm remained around her.
Arthur stopped six feet away.
"You've made your point."
Ethan looked irritated.
"What point?"
"That you know how to hold someone who isn't fighting you."
Ryan turned away.
Cole stared at the floor.
Ethan heard the insult.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
Arthur nodded.
"Then act like it."
"Sit down, old man."
"No."
Something about Arthur's answer bothered Ethan.
No fear.
No performance.
No challenge.
Simply no.
Claire whispered, "Please."
That should have been enough.
Again.
Ethan released her.
She moved immediately behind the counter.
Luis stepped beside her.
Arthur thought the situation was finished.
Then Ethan turned toward him.
"Happy?"
Arthur looked at Claire.
"Are you hurt?"
"My neck hurts."
"Any dizziness?"
"No."
"Trouble breathing?"
"No."
Arthur nodded.
"Good."
Ethan moved closer.
"I'm talking to you."
Arthur sighed.
"I know."
"You train?"
"No."
Ethan's eyes dropped to Arthur's stiff knee.
Then his hands.
Then his old jacket.
"No?"
"Not much anymore."
"You sure act confident."
Arthur shrugged.
"Age."
Ryan stepped between them slightly.
"Let's go."
Ethan ignored him.
"What belt?"
Arthur looked down at his jeans.
"Brown leather. Usually."
Cole laughed unexpectedly.
Ethan glared.
Arthur continued.
"But I left it home."
"You know what I mean."
"I do."
"So what are you?"
Arthur took a breath.
"Tired."
Ethan stepped closer.
"You're trying to embarrass me."
"No."
"You think because I'm younger I'm some idiot?"
"I think putting someone in a choke after they tell you not to is idiotic."
Ethan's face flushed.
"She wasn't in danger."
Claire spoke from behind the counter.
"You don't get to decide how safe I felt."
Ethan turned.
That was the moment everything could still have ended.
Instead he made another choice.
He pointed toward Arthur.
"You think you could stop me?"
Arthur's expression changed.
Barely.
"Ethan," Ryan warned.
Arthur asked, "Is that what you need?"
"What?"
"Someone to prove you're dangerous?"
Ethan laughed.
"You wouldn't last ten seconds."
Arthur looked genuinely disappointed.
"Son, I don't want to fight you."
"Convenient."
"I want you to pay your check and leave."
"Because you're scared?"
Arthur looked at Claire.
Then at Ethan.
"I've been scared plenty of times."
He paused.
"Never of somebody because of the color of fabric tied around their waist."
The words landed.
Ethan pushed Arthur's shoulder.
Not hard.
A challenge.
Arthur did nothing.
Ethan pushed again.
Arthur looked at his hand.
"Don't."
"You going to make me?"
Ryan said, "Ethan, seriously."
Ethan reached a third time.
Arthur moved.
Almost nobody understood what happened.
His left hand redirected Ethan's wrist.
His right touched the upper arm.
One step.
Small turn.
Ethan's balance vanished.
The thirty-year-old black belt stumbled sideways.
Arthur guided rather than threw him.
Ethan hit the floor on his side.
Before he could recover, Arthur controlled one wrist and shoulder from a kneeling position.
No punch.
No kick.
No choke.
Ethan struggled.
Arthur adjusted half an inch.
The struggle stopped.
"Easy," Arthur said.
Ethan's face burned.
"Get off."
"You going to stand up and behave?"
"Get off me!"
Arthur waited.
Ryan crouched.
"Ethan. Stop."
Silence.
Finally Ethan said, "Fine."
Arthur released him immediately.
Then, with difficulty, he stood.
His knee popped audibly.
He grimaced.
Claire stared.
Ethan rose slowly.
For the first time all night, nobody cared that he was a black belt.
And Ethan had no idea what to do with that.
Claire called police.
Ethan reacted as though this were the night's greatest betrayal.
"You're serious?"
"Yes."
"For that?"
"You grabbed me after I said no."
"It was a demonstration."
"You tightened it."
"Because you elbowed me."
Claire stared at him.
"You hear yourself?"
Ethan looked toward his friends for support.
Ryan shook his head.
Cole said nothing.
Marcus sat down.
The police arrived seven minutes later.
Officer Nina Patel entered first.
The second officer was a younger man named Evans.
Patel spoke with Claire privately.
Evans took statements from Luis and the three martial artists.
Arthur returned to booth seven.
Cold coffee.
Untouched pie.
He wanted nothing more than to disappear into both.
Then Officer Patel approached.
"Sir, I need your statement."
Arthur sighed.
"Of course."
He described what happened without commentary.
No heroic language.
No dramatic claims.
"Ethan pushed you?"
"Twice."
"Then?"
"He reached again."
"You took him down?"
"I interrupted his balance."
Patel raised one eyebrow.
"That's one way to say it."
Arthur shrugged.
"Was he injured?"
"No."
"You?"
"My pie is probably ruined."
Patel smiled despite herself.
Then she looked at him more carefully.
"Have we met?"
"I don't think so."
"What did you say your name was?"
"Arthur Bennett."
Something changed.
She stared.
"Captain Bennett?"
Arthur closed his eyes.
"Retired."
Officer Evans looked over.
"What?"
Patel almost laughed.
"You don't know him?"
"No."
"Before your time."
Arthur rubbed his forehead.
"Nina."
She smiled.
"You trained my defensive tactics instructors."
Ethan heard.
He turned.
Patel continued.
"My academy sergeant talked about you."
Arthur muttered, "Sergeants talk too much."
Claire stared.
"You trained police?"
"For a while."
Patel said, "Twenty-five years."
Arthur gave her a look.
She ignored it.
"Judo instructor too."
Ethan's face changed.
"What rank?"
Arthur sighed.
"Does that matter?"
To Ethan, apparently, yes.
Patel smiled.
"Fifth degree when you retired?"
"Sixth now."
Ryan whispered something under his breath.
Ethan stared at Arthur.
"And jiu-jitsu?"
Arthur looked almost offended.
"Everybody tonight obsessed with belts?"
Claire smiled faintly.
Patel answered anyway.
"Black belt."
Arthur groaned.
"Nina."
"What? Public record."
Ethan looked as if someone had altered reality.
