"Strength is useful."

Cole waited.

"Discipline is better."

"Why?"

"Because strength answers the question, 'Can I?'"

He paused.

"Discipline answers the question, 'Should I?'"

Cole looked down.

Elias continued.

"You have the first."

"And not the second?"

"Not yet."

Cole was quiet.

Then he asked:

"Who are you?"

Elias looked toward the dark training facility.

"Someone who learned the hard way."

Before Cole could respond, the lights went out.

The entire building went black.

Emergency alarms sounded.

Soldiers shouted.

Elias moved instantly.

"Down."

Cole dropped.

A window shattered.

A gunshot echoed.

Elias crossed the room faster than Cole believed possible.

He pulled two recruits behind cover.

"Stay down!"

Another shot.

Then silence.

Elias looked at Cole.

"Can you move?"

"Yes."

"Then help me."

Cole followed.

For the first time, he stopped trying to be the strongest person in the room.

He simply listened.

And that decision would save his life.

 The First Test

The attacker had entered through the archive wing.

Security teams moved toward the area.

Elias took Cole and two recruits through a service corridor.

"Why are we going this way?" Cole whispered.

"Because they'll expect us to use the main corridor."

Cole looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because I used to plan these things."

They reached a locked door.

Elias pulled a small tool from his pocket.

Cole watched him work.

"You carry that around?"

"Sometimes."

The lock opened.

They entered the archive wing.

Shelves stretched into darkness.

Boxes.

Files.

Old photographs.

Elias stopped.

One cabinet stood open.

A file lay on the floor.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

Cole noticed.

"What is it?"

Elias didn't answer.

Cole looked over his shoulder.

The file carried a single name.

VOSS, ELIAS.

Below it:

OPERATION NIGHT WATCHER.

Cole stared.

"That's you."

Elias closed the file.

"Yes."

"What's Night Watcher?"

Elias looked at him.

"That's what people called me."

"Why?"

"Because I was sent where nobody else wanted to go."

Cole lowered his voice.

"Did you really go alone?"

"Sometimes."

"Thirty-seven soldiers?"

Elias looked away.

"That was one mission."

"What happened?"

"That's not your story."

Cole nodded.

Then footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Elias raised a finger.

Silence.

Three armed men entered.

Cole tensed.

Elias whispered:

"Stay behind me."

Cole frowned.

"I can fight."

"I know."

"Then—"

"Stay behind me."

The first attacker appeared.

Elias moved.

His body seemed to disappear.

A wrist was trapped.

A shoulder turned.

The weapon dropped.

The second attacker rushed.

Elias stepped aside.

Cole caught the man's arm.

For one second, they worked together.

The attacker hit the floor.

The third fled.

Cole looked at Elias.

"You planned that."

"No."

"You knew where he'd step."

"Experience."

Cole nodded slowly.

Then Elias said something Cole would remember for the rest of his life.

"Experience is just mistakes that survived."

 What Happened Twenty-Three Years Ago

After the attackers were captured, the base commander gathered the senior staff.

Cole was not supposed to be there.

But Elias asked him to stay.

Mercer looked at both of them.

"The archive was breached because someone was searching for Operation Night Watcher."

Cole listened.

"Why?"

Mercer looked at Elias.

"Because someone believes the operation wasn't what we were told."

Cole frowned.

"What were you told?"

Elias answered.

"We were told thirty-seven soldiers had been captured."

"And?"

"They weren't."

The room became silent.

Elias continued.

"We were sent into a remote compound to recover them."

"What did you find?"

"Thirty-six bodies."

"And the last?"

"A man named David Kane."

Mercer looked down.

"Kane was believed to have betrayed the unit."

Cole asked:

"Did he?"

Elias shook his head.

"No."

"Then what happened?"

"Kane discovered that someone inside our command structure was selling information."

Mercer said quietly:

"Someone high-ranking."

Elias nodded.

"We found evidence."

"Why wasn't it released?"

"Because the person responsible had friends in powerful places."

Cole looked around.

"Who?"

Elias stared at Mercer.

"General Victor Hale."

The room went silent.

Hale had died years ago.

But his network had survived.

Elias explained that the Night Files contained evidence connecting Hale to a secret network that had compromised military operations.

The original files had been sealed.

Until now.

Cole understood.

"Someone is trying to destroy the evidence."
