She dropped to her knees beside the woman, moving with explosive speed. She ripped the trauma bag open, her hands flying as she simultaneously checked the carotid pulse and leaned her ear over the woman's mouth to listen for breathing.
"No pulse, apneic," Sarah announced sharply, her voice devoid of panic, entirely clinical. "Dave, get on the chest! Start CPR! I'm hooking up the pads!"
Dave immediately straddled the woman, locking his hands and beginning the violent, life-saving compressions that Adrian had been forced to abandon minutes earlier. The sickening crunch of cartilage echoed again, a sound that made Officer Miller flinch slightly.
Sarah ripped the woman's shirt open, exposing her chest, and slapped the adhesive defibrillator pads onto her bare skin. She powered on the machine.
“Analyzing heart rhythm. Do not touch the patient,” the automated voice of the AED commanded.
Dave threw his hands in the air, hovering over the chest. Sarah stared at the small screen on the device, praying for a shockable rhythm. V-Fib. V-Tach. Anything but the flat, hopeless line of asystole.
“Shock advised. Charging.”
A collective breath was held. The machine had found a chaotic, dying rhythm. There was still a chance.
“Stand clear. Press flashing button to rescue.”
"Clear!" Sarah shouted, ensuring no one was touching the patient, and slammed her palm onto the flashing orange button.
The woman's body jolted violently upward as thousands of volts of electricity coursed through her myocardium, attempting to reset the electrical chaos of her failing heart. She fell back against the pavement, limp.
"Resume compressions!" Sarah ordered. Dave immediately drove his hands back into her chest.
Only then, with the resuscitation effort fully underway, did Sarah allow herself to look up and take in the rest of the scene. She saw Officer Miller standing there, looking slightly pale, holding an empty pepper spray canister. And then, she looked at the "suspect" writhing on the ground, his face stained orange, coughing violently, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back by the rookie officer.
Sarah’s eyes narrowed. She recognized the broad shoulders, the short hair, the athletic build. But more than that, she recognized the voice, still hoarse and coughing, asking a question that only a medical professional would ask.
"Did... did the AED shock?" Adrian gasped from the ground. "Did she convert?"
Sarah froze, the IV needle she was preparing hovering in mid-air. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with horrifying clarity. She stood up slowly, her gaze shifting from the blinded man on the ground to Officer Miller, her expression transforming from clinical focus to utter, furious disbelief.
The park was a cacophony of sound—the rhythmic counting of Dave performing CPR, the mechanical hum of the defibrillator, the static of police radios, and Adrian’s ragged, wet coughing. But for Sarah Jenkins, everything seemed to go eerily silent as the reality of the situation washed over her.
She looked at the man in handcuffs. She knew exactly who he was. Just three weeks ago, she had sat in a sterile hospital auditorium for eight hours, undergoing her mandatory Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) recertification. The man leading that grueling, intensive course, the man who had relentlessly drilled her team on the exact procedures they were executing right now, was the same man currently lying on the asphalt, treated like a violent criminal.
It was Dr. Adrian Cross. The Chief of Emergency Medicine. The man whose protocols dictated how every paramedic in the city operated.
Sarah turned slowly to face Officer Miller. The paramedic, usually calm and collected under immense pressure, felt a surge of rage so profound it made her hands shake. She wasn't just looking at a cop who made a mistake; she was looking at a man whose ego had actively sabotaged the survival chances of a dying patient.
"What did you do?" Sarah whispered, her voice dangerously low.
"I secured the scene," Miller puffed his chest out, falling back on police jargon to defend himself, though doubt was beginning to creep into his mind. "He was assaulting her. I gave him an order to step back, and he refused compliance. I deployed OC spray and—"
"Are you insane?" Sarah exploded, her voice echoing through the park, carrying a fury that made even the rookie officer, Davis, take a step back. She pointed a trembling, gloved finger directly at Adrian, who was struggling to sit up despite the blinding pain.
"That's Dr. Adrian Cross!" Sarah screamed, her voice breaking with indignation and horror. "He trained us to do exactly what you just stopped him from doing!"
