The arrogance on Mercer's face did not merely fade; it completely disintegrated. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin a sallow, chalky white.
"No..." Mercer whispered, stepping back half an inch.
Malcolm stood in the center of the marble floor, his wrists bound behind his back in cold steel, his robe slightly parted, looking down at Mercer with absolute, devastating serenity.
"Yes," Malcolm said softly.
Mercer swallowed hard, his throat dry. "You... you never stated you were a judge!"
"I informed you twice that my courtroom was directly behind you," Malcolm replied, his voice carrying effortlessly. "You informed me that my judicial robe was a costume."
"I thought... I thought you were some political protestor trying to cause trouble!" Mercer stammered, his hands trembling as he reached frantically into his pocket for his cuff key. "Look, Judge... Your Honor... let me get these off you right now. It was a complete misunderstanding—"
"Do not touch me," Malcolm commanded.
Mercer froze, the brass key shaking between his fingers.
"Your Honor, please—"
"Step back, Officer Mercer," Malcolm repeated. He did not raise his voice, but the weight of absolute legal authority backed every word.
Mercer took two steps backward as if struck by a physical force.
"Is your body-worn camera actively recording?" Malcolm asked calmly.
Mercer touched his chest instinctively. "Yes... yes, sir."
"Good," Malcolm said. He turned to Deputy Miller. "Deputy Miller, please contact Courthouse Security Supervisor Captain Olivia Grant immediately."
Miller didn't hesitate. He grabbed his radio instantly. "Control, Unit 4! I need Captain Grant on the third-floor north hallway immediately! Code Alpha! I repeat, Code Alpha!"
Mercer was breathing heavily now, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Your Honor... please... we don't need to involve Captain Grant. It was an honest mistake! I was just trying to maintain security!"
Malcolm looked at him with quiet, unyielding discipline.
"A mistake, Officer Mercer, is misplacing a file folder," Malcolm said softly. "What occurred here was a series of conscious, deliberate choices."
Mercer stared at him, speechless.
"You chose to ignore verbal warnings," Malcolm continued. "You chose to dismiss an Officer of the Court. You chose to ignore a fellow officer. And you chose to apply illegal physical restraint based entirely on your own assumptions."
Two minutes later, the heavy doors at the end of the hall burst open.
Captain Olivia Grant marched down the corridor. She was fifty-two years old, a twenty-eight-year veteran of law enforcement with short gray hair, sharp blue eyes, and a legendary intolerance for procedural violations. Two armed security deputies followed close behind her.
She stopped dead in her tracks as she saw Judge Malcolm Hayes standing cuffed in his robes.
"Your Honor?" Grant gasped, her face turning pale.
"Captain Grant," Malcolm acknowledged calmly.
Grant turned her gaze onto Mercer, her expression instantly hardening into pure iron. "Mercer... tell me you didn't."
Mercer tried to find his voice. "Captain, I was attempting to secure the floor—"
"Shut your mouth!" Grant barked. She stepped up to Malcolm. "Your Honor, are you injured?"
