He moved.

Five inches.

Then a foot.

Then another.

She dragged him backward across the pavement.

Ten feet.

Twenty.

Thirty.

The heat behind them intensified.

Chloe looked over her shoulder.

The flames had reached the fuel.

She had just enough time to throw herself over the man.

The explosion came.

She couldn't hear it.

But she felt it.

A tremendous pressure slammed through her body.

The ground disappeared beneath her.

Her vision filled with white light.

Then everything went black.

When Chloe opened her eyes again, she saw a white ceiling.

Lights.

A hospital.

Her hands hurt.

They were wrapped in thick bandages.

Her head felt heavy.

A man was standing beside the bed.

Police badge.

Cheap suit.

Late forties.

He tapped the metal bed frame.

The vibration got Chloe's attention.

He sat.

His lips moved.

Chloe pointed to her ears.

Then toward the notepad.

The detective sighed.

He wrote.

Detective Miller. You're a hero. What happened?

Chloe took the pen.

Her fingers shook.

She wrote:

The truck swerved on purpose.

Miller looked at her.

She continued.

The driver jumped out before the crash. He ran into the desert.

Miller's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Chloe saw it.

His jaw tightened.

His eyes hardened.

He took the page.

Tore it from the notebook.

Put it inside his jacket.

Then he wrote:

You may be confused because of the explosion. Rest.

Chloe stared at him.

She pointed toward the missing paper.

He stood.

The door opened.

He left.

Chloe watched him go.

Something was wrong.

She didn't know what.

But she knew.

An hour later, another man entered.

He was enormous.

Leather vest.

Gray beard.

Scar across one eyebrow.

His clothes were worn.

His eyes were sharp.

He looked like someone who had spent most of his life learning not to trust strangers.

He approached the bed.

Then he raised his phone.

A text-to-speech application displayed large letters.

MY NAME IS TOMMY. THEY CALL ME REAPER.

Chloe read.

He typed again.

YOU SAVED JACK TAGGART.

Another line appeared.

OUR PRESIDENT.

Chloe nodded.

Reaper studied her.

Then:

WHAT DID THE POLICE ASK YOU?

Chloe reached for his phone.

Her bandaged fingers struggled with the screen.

She typed the truth.

She showed him.

Reaper read it.

His entire face changed.

He took the phone back.

His fingers moved rapidly.

MILLER IS DIRTY.

Chloe stared.

Another message appeared.

THE TRUCK WASN'T AN ACCIDENT.

Then:

THE PEOPLE WHO ORDERED IT ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE DRIVER.

Chloe's heart began pounding.

Reaper typed one final sentence.

AND NOW THEY KNOW YOU SAW HIM.

He looked toward the hallway.

Then back at Chloe.

His expression was no longer gentle.

It was determined.

He typed:

WE HAVE TO GET YOU OUT OF HERE.

Before Chloe could respond, Reaper stepped into the hallway.

The next few minutes changed everything.

Men in leather vests began appearing.

One.

Then three.

Then six.

Then more.

They moved quickly.

They blocked the elevators.

They positioned themselves at the stairwell.

They stood outside Chloe's room.

She watched through the glass.

Then she felt it.

A vibration.

Not motorcycles.

Footsteps.

Many footsteps.

Fast.

Heavy.

Approaching.

Reaper looked through the glass.

Their eyes met.

He raised one hand.

Stay back.

Chloe's heart raced.

Then the hallway lights flickered.

Shadows moved.

A door at the far end burst open.

Reaper pulled his weapon.

Chloe could not hear the gunfire.

But she felt every shot through the floor.

The hospital became a battlefield.

And Chloe Harper, who had spent her entire life in silence, suddenly found herself trapped in the middle of a war that everyone else had heard coming.

She simply felt it first.

The Men Behind the Leather

The firefight lasted less than five minutes.

To Chloe, it felt like an hour.

She sat against the hospital bed with her knees pulled toward her chest.

The floor shook repeatedly.

People moved past the frosted glass.

Shapes.

Flashes.

Shadows.

She could not hear the screams.

That somehow made the scene worse.

She saw a nurse running.

She saw Reaper crouched beside the doorway.

She saw another biker pull an injured man behind a wall.

She saw sparks erupt from a metal railing.

Every vibration traveled through the bed frame.

Every movement became information.

Then suddenly, everything stopped.

The hallway became still.

Reaper slowly stood.

He looked through the glass.

Chloe raised her eyebrows.

He typed on his phone.

SAFE FOR NOW.

She exhaled.

A few minutes later, the hospital security team returned with federal agents.

That surprised Chloe.

Reaper seemed unsurprised.

One of the agents introduced herself through writing.

Special Agent Elena Ruiz.

She sat beside Chloe.

"We need to understand what happened."

Chloe pointed toward her ears.

Ruiz nodded.

She pulled out a tablet.

You can type.
