Right as the truck approached the bikers, it violently swerved across the double yellow line.
Chloe slammed on her brakes, sliding to a halt in the gravel shoulder. Through her windshield, she watched the horrific, silent carnage unfold. The massive grill of the semi plowed into the formation, scattering steel and bodies like broken toys. The truck jackknifed, crushing the lead biker beneath a tangle of chrome and rubber before slamming into a rock embankment.
Thick, black smoke instantly began to billow from the truck's ruptured fuel tanks.
Chloe didn't think. The survival instinct that told her to drive away was entirely drowned out by the sight of a man trapped beneath the wreckage.
She kicked her door open and sprinted toward the disaster. The ambient heat of the desert was nothing compared to the blistering wall of heat radiating from the crashed semi. Flames were already licking at the cab, crawling steadily toward the leaking diesel.
She found the lead biker pinned beneath his crushed Harley-Davidson and the mangled front bumper of the truck. He was a large man clad in heavy black leather, his face obscured by blood and dirt. He was conscious, his mouth moving in a scream Chloe couldn't hear.
