A few students smiled.

Gavin felt embarrassed.

He looked at Leah.

“She doesn't seem worried.”

Leah studied him.

“No.”

“There you go.”

“That wasn't permission.”

Gavin stood.

“Look, I'm not going to hurt her.”

The room grew even quieter.

Leah's expression changed.

Not anger.

Interest.

“You're not?”

Gavin smiled.

“No offense.”

“None taken.”

He stepped toward the center.

“You pick the drill.”

Sam started forward.

Leah lifted one hand.

“It's okay.”

Sam looked at her.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Gavin rolled his shoulders.

“Finally.”

Leah stepped onto the center mat.

The size difference looked almost absurd.

Gavin's shoulders seemed nearly twice as wide.

His hands looked large enough to wrap around both of her wrists simultaneously.

He smiled down at her.

Leah looked up.

No fear.

That bothered him.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“Anything.”

“No.”

She stepped backward.

“You wanted the test. You choose.”

Gavin blinked.

“Choose what?”

“What happens next.”

The room fell silent.

Leah held up one finger.

“You can try to take me down.”

Second finger.

“You can start with both hands around my waist.”

Third.

“Or you can start on top after I'm already on the floor.”

Gavin laughed.

“You're giving me position?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if size is the only thing that matters, it shouldn't matter where we start.”

Several students reacted quietly.

Gavin's pride made the decision before his judgment did.

“Floor.”

Leah nodded.

“Okay.”

She lay on her back.

Then she pointed toward herself.

“You start on top.”

Gavin looked toward Sam.

Coach Sam rubbed one hand over his face.

“Controlled.”

“Of course.”

“No slamming.”

“Got it.”

“No twisting anything after a tap.”

Gavin smiled.

“She'll be fine.”

Sam stared at him.

“I wasn't talking to her.”

A few students laughed.

Gavin stopped smiling.

He knelt over Leah.

She looked impossibly small beneath him.

“Ready?” she asked.

“Yep.”

“You sure?”

“Completely.”

Leah smiled.

“Then let's see what all that strength can actually reach.”

Sam clapped once.

“Go.”

And twenty seconds later, Gavin Cross discovered that being the biggest man in the room and controlling the room were two completely different things.

Gavin's first mistake was trying to prove immediately that Leah could not move him.

He spread his knees wide and drove his weight downward.

More than three hundred pounds of pressure settled toward her torso.

He expected panic.

Most beginners reacted that way beneath someone much heavier.

They pushed wildly.

Held their breath.

Turned their faces.

Tried to bench-press the other person away.

Leah did none of those things.

She placed one forearm beneath Gavin's collarbone and another against his hip.

Then she breathed.

That was all.

Gavin almost laughed.

“That's it?”

Leah did not answer.

He shifted his weight forward.

Exactly what she wanted.

Her hips moved.

Not far.

Maybe two inches.

Her left knee entered the space between them.

Gavin tried to crush it flat.

Leah changed angle.

Suddenly his weight was no longer directly above her.

It was traveling past her.

Gavin posted one hand to stop himself.

Leah caught the arm.

He pulled.

Nothing.

Her legs moved around his shoulder.

Gavin realized too late that the position had completely changed.

He had started on top.

Now he was kneeling beside her with one arm trapped between both of her legs.

“What—”

Leah shifted her hips.

Pressure appeared against Gavin's elbow.

Not violent.

Precise.

He tried curling his arm.

Her entire body controlled the joint.

He flexed harder.

For a second, his strength slowed her.

Then Leah adjusted by perhaps an inch.

The pressure returned.

Sharp now.

Gavin's smile vanished.

Leah said calmly, “Tap when you need to.”

He refused.

Several students stopped breathing.

Sam said, “Gavin.”

Gavin tried stacking her.

Leah rotated underneath him.

The angle became worse.

Pain shot through his arm.

He slapped the mat twice.

Leah released instantly.

Sam looked at the wall clock.

“Eighteen seconds.”

Nobody laughed.

That somehow felt worse.

Gavin pulled his arm against his chest.

Nothing was injured.

Only his pride.

“That was a trick.”

Leah sat up.

“Yes.”

He blinked.

She smiled.

“Most techniques are.”

A few students laughed now.

Gavin stood.

“You started from a weird position.”

Leah looked confused.

“You chose it.”

“I didn't know what you were going to do.”

“That tends to happen when fighting somebody.”

The laughter grew.

Gavin's face became hot.

“One more.”

Sam stepped forward.

“No.”

Gavin looked at Leah.

“You can't tell anything from eighteen seconds.”

Leah stood.

“I learned several things.”

“Like what?”

“You put your weight forward when frustrated.”

Gavin's jaw tightened.

“You straighten your arms when somebody moves underneath you.”

Silence.

“You hold your breath when you use maximum strength.”

She pointed toward his feet.

“And you're uncomfortable once your knees come close together.”

Gavin stared.

“You got all that in eighteen seconds?”

“Probably twelve.”

Anthony turned away to hide a smile.

Gavin took a step toward Leah.

“Standing.”

Sam said, “We're done.”

Leah looked at Gavin.

He could see something in her face now.

Not arrogance.

Almost concern.

That made him angrier.

“Standing,” he repeated.

Leah sighed.

“Okay.”

Sam stared.

“Leah.”

“He needs the answer.”

Gavin heard the wording.

“I need the answer?”

She nodded.

“You're not asking whether strength matters anymore.”

“What am I asking?”

“Whether the first result was real.”

Gavin opened his mouth.

Closed it.

She was right.

Leah moved to the center.

“Standing.”

Gavin followed.

This time nobody smiled.

Sam stepped between them.

“Light contact. This is positional grappling. No striking.”

Both nodded.

Sam moved away.

“Start.”

Gavin did not charge immediately.

He had learned something.

Leah noticed.

He reached cautiously.

She allowed him to establish a grip around her upper body.

Gavin smiled.

Now he had her.

His arms locked behind her back.

Leah almost disappeared against his chest.

He tightened.

“Still think position matters?”

Her voice came from somewhere near his shoulder.

“Yes.”

Gavin attempted to lift her.

Leah hooked one foot around his ankle.

His balance shifted.

He corrected.

She changed direction.

He stepped again.

Her hip moved beneath his center of gravity.

Gavin felt something impossible.

His heels became light.

Then the room turned sideways.

He hit the mat.

Not hard.

Leah controlled the fall.

Before Gavin could understand what happened, she was beside him.

Her forearm rested lightly against his shoulder.

One knee near his hip.

Her breathing had barely changed.

Gavin sat up.

“What was that?”

“Timing.”

“You couldn't throw me normally.”

“No.”

She nodded toward him.

“You're too heavy.”

Gavin waited.

Leah continued.

“So I didn't.”

He frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“I didn't lift you.”

“You fell.”

“Yes.”

“You made me fall.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“You moved yourself.”

A brown belt named Marcus laughed.
