“It means you should leave him alone.”

Derek stared at the wall.

He remembered Marcus saying:

You already had your chance.

For the first time, Derek wondered whether he had made a terrible mistake.

He was right.

He had.

But it was about to become much worse.

The Photograph

Monday morning, Sarah found Marcus in the storage room.

He was repairing a broken mop handle.

“You fought him.”

Marcus didn't look up.

“He challenged me.”

“You could have walked away.”

“I tried.”

Sarah leaned against the door.

“You're not what you pretend to be.”

Marcus smiled.

“I'm a janitor.”

“You know what I mean.”

He stopped working.

Sarah lowered her voice.

“I saw the way you moved.”

Marcus said nothing.

“I've worked around fighters for twelve years. I've seen professionals.”

She paused.

“What you did wasn't normal.”

Marcus tightened the screw.

“Maybe I'm just good at staying out of the way.”

“Marcus.”

He finally looked at her.

“I don't want that life anymore.”

Sarah understood immediately.

“What happened?”

Marcus looked away.

“A long time ago, people I cared about died.”

Sarah didn't ask for details.

But she saw the pain in his eyes.

Then the door opened.

Derek stood there.

“You two having a meeting?”

Sarah straightened.

“No.”

Derek entered.

His attitude was different.

Less arrogant.

More cautious.

He looked at Marcus.

“I want a rematch.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“You afraid?”

Marcus smiled.

“No.”

“Then why not?”

“Because I already beat you.”

Derek's jaw tightened.

“You got lucky.”

Marcus returned to repairing the handle.

“Maybe.”

Derek stared.

Then left.

Sarah watched him go.

“He's not going to stop.”

“I know.”

“You should leave.”

Marcus shook his head.

“This job is important.”

“Why?”

Marcus smiled.

“Because my daughter thinks her father finally has a normal life.”

Sarah didn't answer.

Marcus kept working.

That evening, a stranger entered Iron Forge.

He was an older Black man wearing a dark suit.

He walked directly toward the front desk.

“Marcus Williams.”

The receptionist pointed toward the back.

The man found Marcus near the equipment room.

Marcus looked up.

His face changed instantly.

The stranger said nothing.

He simply handed Marcus a photograph.

Marcus took it.

It showed six men standing together.

Younger.

Stronger.

Serious.

Marcus was standing in the middle.

The man beside him had his arm around Marcus's shoulder.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

His thumb touched the face of the man beside him.

“Where did you get this?”

The stranger answered quietly.

“Someone has been asking questions.”

“Who?”

“Derek Stone.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Of course.”

The stranger lowered his voice.

“You need to understand something. Your past isn't interested in staying buried.”

Marcus folded the photograph.

“I buried it for a reason.”

“You don't get to decide whether it stays buried.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Who are you?”

The stranger smiled sadly.

“You know exactly who I am.”

Marcus stared at him.

Then recognition appeared.

“Leon.”

Leon nodded.

They shook hands.

Two old soldiers.

Two men who had survived what others hadn't.

“What happened to the others?” Marcus asked.

Leon's expression hardened.

“You know.”

Marcus looked down.

The photograph trembled slightly.

Twenty years ago, Marcus had led a specialized tactical team.

They weren't famous.

They didn't appear in newspapers.

Their missions didn't become documentaries.

They existed in shadows.

And sometimes the shadows demanded a price.

Marcus had walked away after one mission went catastrophically wrong.

He lost people.

He lost friends.

He lost the version of himself that believed violence could always be justified.

Afterward, he changed his name.

Changed his life.

Became invisible.

Leon understood.

But now someone had started digging.

And Marcus knew what that meant.

“You should go,” Marcus said.

Leon nodded.

“I will.”

Before leaving, Leon looked back.

“You were always the best of us.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Leon smiled.

“You still don't believe it.”

Then he left.

Marcus stood alone.

He looked at the photograph again.

And for the first time in twenty years, he wondered if the past had finally found him.

 When the Mask Falls

Derek's obsession became dangerous.

He started watching Marcus.

He noticed everything.

The way Marcus scanned rooms.

The way he carried heavy equipment.

The way he could hear footsteps behind him.

The way he never startled.

Derek began telling people that Marcus had a secret.

Soon rumors spread.

Former military.

Special forces.

Bodyguard.

Assassin.

Nobody knew the truth.

But everyone knew something was different.

Then came the night of the fundraiser.

Iron Forge hosted an event for investors.
