Her leg was held together by pins and metal supports.

She looked smaller without her leather.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

"Look at you," Roxanne said.

"You don't look so great yourself."

Cole laughed.

Roxanne grinned.

"Come here."

Riley hesitated.

Then she approached.

Roxanne took her hand.

"I owe you my life."

Riley stared at the floor.

"I just didn't want you to die alone."

Roxanne squeezed her hand.

"Well, you didn't."

Then she leaned closer.

"And neither will you."

Those words broke something inside Riley.

Not painfully.

Something that had been frozen for years finally began to thaw.

The State Comes Calling

Two months later, the past found Riley.

A former caseworker recognized her outside a grocery store.

The police arrived.

Her name was entered into the system.

She was still a ward of the state.

A runaway.

A minor.

The clubhouse gate opened to two detectives and a social worker carrying a court order.

Cole met them outside.

He did not threaten them.

He didn't shout.

He simply said:

"She's not going back to the cages."

The state argued that Riley was living with a dangerous criminal organization.

They wanted custody.

They wanted her returned to the system.

The hearing was scheduled for Friday.

That night, Riley sat at the clubhouse bar.

Her hands shook around a glass of water.

"They're going to take me," she whispered.

Cole continued polishing a piece of chrome.

"The system only has power when you stand alone."

He looked at her.

"Tomorrow, you ain't standing alone."

The Call

The news traveled quickly.

A seventeen-year-old runaway had saved the club president's wife.

Now the state wanted to take her away.

Cole made one phone call.

Then another.

The club's communication network came alive.

Seattle.

Oregon.

Idaho.

Nevada.

California.

Nomads.

Charters.

Old friends.

People who had never met Riley.

They didn't care.

A life had been saved.

A promise had been made.

And the family was being threatened.

By dawn Friday, motorcycles were already moving toward Seattle.
