Fifteen Years

“I sentence you to fifteen years in state prison.”

Judge Walter Whitaker spoke the words with the calm authority of a man who had delivered thousands of sentences before. His gavel struck the bench.

Crack.

The sound traveled through the dark, walnut-paneled courtroom.

Behind the defense table, four uniformed officers waited to take the defendant into custody. Reporters leaned forward. Spectators whispered. Court clerks lowered their eyes and began gathering their papers.

Everything appeared finished.

The defendant, however, did not move.

Marcus Hale stood quietly in his charcoal-gray suit, his hands resting at his sides. At thirty-eight, he was tall, athletic, and remarkably composed. His polished shoes, crisp white shirt, and black tie made him look less like a desperate criminal than a businessman attending an important meeting.

Judge Whitaker looked down at him.

“Mr. Hale, you have been given every opportunity to defend yourself.”

Marcus raised his eyes.

“Are you certain you want that sentence entered into the record, Your Honor?”

A murmur passed through the courtroom.

Whitaker frowned.

“You heard the sentence.”

“I did.”

“Then accept it.”

Marcus looked toward the large black screen behind the judge.

“I just wanted to give you one last opportunity to reconsider.”

Whitaker's expression hardened.

“Bailiffs. Cuff him.”

The officers stepped forward.

Marcus did not resist.

Instead, he turned toward the screen.

“Play the video.”

Whitaker's eyebrows tightened.

“What video?”

Marcus looked directly at him.

“The one showing you taking the bribe this morning.”

The courtroom froze.

Then a woman in the second row stood.

She opened her black blazer and revealed an FBI badge.

At almost the same moment, two men rose near the rear doors. Three more agents emerged from different parts of the gallery.

The courtroom doors closed.

The spectators gasped.

Judge Whitaker gripped the arms of his chair.

“This is my courtroom!”

The female agent walked into the aisle.

“Walter Whitaker, remain where you are.”

“I am a superior court judge.”

“And you are currently the subject of a federal arrest warrant.”

Whitaker turned toward the officers.

“Remove these people.”

Nobody moved.

Then the screen behind the bench came alive.

A grainy security image appeared.

It showed the courthouse parking garage at 6:12 that morning.

Judge Walter Whitaker stepped from a black sedan.

A second man waited beside a delivery van.

The man carried a heavy leather duffel bag.

He handed it to Whitaker.

Whitaker opened it.

Inside were twelve gold bars.

A hidden microphone captured the conversation.

“Fifteen years,” the man said. “No reduced sentence. No appeal bond. No chance Hale walks out of this building.”

Whitaker examined one of the bars.

“By lunchtime,” he replied, “he'll belong to the state.”

The video stopped.

Silence filled the courtroom.

Marcus turned toward the judge.

“That statement is on the record too.”

Whitaker's face had gone pale.

“That footage is fabricated.”

The FBI agent stepped closer.

“Then you can explain that to the federal investigators.”

Whitaker looked desperately toward the officers.

“Do your jobs!”

The oldest bailiff lowered his hands.

He had finally understood.

They had arrived expecting to arrest a dangerous financial criminal.

Instead, they were standing inside an FBI operation.
