She wanted the truth.
And the truth needed witnesses.
Preston released her.
"You have one minute before I call security."
Cassandra almost smiled.
"Go ahead."
"What?"
"Call them."
"You don't tell me what to do."
"I just did."
Preston stared at her.
Then he reached for his phone.
Before he could dial, Cassandra removed her baseball cap.
Pinned beneath the inner seam was a tiny camera.
Preston froze.
Nolan's smile disappeared.
Daniel stared.
Cassandra looked directly into the camera.
"Begin live review."
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then every screen on the thirty-eighth floor went black.
The Face Behind the Cap
Across the office, computers flickered.
Daniel's spreadsheet vanished.
Marcy's payroll system disappeared.
Nolan's tablet froze.
Preston's expression changed.
"What did you do?"
Cassandra did not answer.
The screens came back.
But they were no longer displaying spreadsheets.
They were displaying Preston.
His own face appeared on every monitor.
His own voice echoed through the office.
"Get on your knees and scrub."
The timestamp appeared in the corner.
The location appeared beneath it.
Executive Restroom.
Thirty-eighth Floor.
Incident Classification: Workplace Assault.
Preston stared at the screen.
Then at Cassandra.
His face lost its color.
"No."
Cassandra stood silently.
"No," Preston repeated.
Nolan rushed toward the nearest computer.
He began typing.
Nothing happened.
He tried another terminal.
Nothing.
"Kill the feed!" Preston shouted.
"I can't."
"You're IT!"
"I'm not IT!"
"Then find someone who is!"
Employees began stepping out of their offices.
People gathered in the hallway.
They watched Preston's behavior replayed before their eyes.
They saw him grabbing Cassandra.
They heard him threatening her.
They heard him ordering her onto her knees.
And suddenly, something changed.
The employees were no longer relying on memory.
They had evidence.
Preston looked around.
"Everybody back to work!"
Nobody moved.
"Did you hear me?"
Still nothing.
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
He no longer needed it.
Cassandra reached up and removed her hoodie.
Underneath was a plain white blouse.
She removed the cap completely.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"Thank you."
Daniel stared at her.
"For what?"
"For being brave."
Preston turned toward him.
"Brave?"
Then he laughed.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Cassandra looked at him.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
She reached into the cleaning cart.
And pulled out a small black folder.
Inside was her corporate identification.
She clipped it to her blouse.
Cassandra Monroe.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer.
Meridian Freight International.
Preston stared at the badge.
His mouth opened.
No words came.
Nolan whispered, "Oh my God."
Cassandra turned toward the office.
The employees were frozen.
Some looked shocked.
Some looked embarrassed.
Some looked relieved.
She said quietly:
"My name is Cassandra Monroe."
Daniel stared.
Marcy covered her mouth.
Walter whispered, "The CEO?"
Cassandra nodded.
Preston stepped backward.
"This is a setup."
"No."
"You came here to trap me."
"I came here to find out whether the complaints were true."
"You lied about who you were."
"I concealed my identity."
"That's illegal."
Cassandra almost smiled.
"No, Preston. What you did is the problem."
The elevator chimed.
Everyone turned.
The doors opened.
Six corporate security officers stepped out.
Behind them were Evelyn Hart, Meridian's chief legal officer; the head of Human Resources; and two members of the board audit committee.
Preston stared at them.
Then at Cassandra.
"You planned this."
"I prepared for it."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Director Vale."
Preston swallowed.
"Ms. Hart, there has been a misunderstanding."
"No."
Evelyn held up a tablet.
"There has been an investigation."
Preston looked toward Nolan.
"Nolan."
Nolan said nothing.
"Cassandra," Preston began, "please."
She raised a hand.
"Don't."
He stopped.
For the first time since anyone could remember, Preston Vale looked powerless.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Powerless.
And everyone on the floor saw it.
The Voices That Finally Spoke
Evelyn Hart stood beneath the largest monitor.
"Preston Vale, this recording has been automatically preserved and distributed to the board, legal department, Human Resources, and internal compliance."
Preston shook his head.
"I didn't assault anyone."
The screen replayed the moment his hand grabbed Cassandra's sleeve.
Everyone watched.
Preston's voice filled the room.
"Get on your knees and scrub."
Nobody spoke.
Then Cassandra turned toward the employees.
"How long has this been happening?"
Silence.
She did not pressure them.
She waited.
Daniel looked at the floor.
Then he raised his head.
"Two years."
Cassandra nodded.
"Tell me."
Daniel took a breath.
"He changed my schedule after I complained about overtime."
"Did you report it?"
"Yes."
"To whom?"
"HR."
"What happened?"
"They told me to talk to Preston."
The room went quiet.
Marcy stepped forward.
"He changed mine too."
Cassandra looked at her.
Marcy's voice trembled.
"I work payroll. I saw hours disappearing from employee records."
"Whose orders?"
"Preston's."
Nolan interrupted.
"That's not true."
Marcy looked at him.
"You approved the adjustments."
Nolan's face tightened.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I do."
Marcy took out her phone.
"I kept copies."
Cassandra looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn nodded.
"We already have preliminary evidence."
One employee stepped forward.
"He threatened me when I asked about missing overtime."
