When they arrived, his men surrounded the building.

Mason looked at Maya.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Maya.”

“You said I don't have to leave.”

“I said stay safe.”

“And you think hiding me in a car is safe?”

“Yes.”

“Then I'm coming.”

He stared at her.

She stared back.

Finally he sighed.

“You're impossible.”

“So I've been told.”

They entered.

Evan was tied to a chair.

Victor stood behind him.

Maya's heart broke.

“Evan!”

Victor turned.

“Maya.”

Mason stepped forward.

“You have five seconds.”

Victor laughed.

“You always did like giving orders.”

Mason's expression didn't change.

“You're done.”

Victor shook his head.

“No. You are.”

He pulled out a phone.

A video played.

Maya saw images of Mason meeting with criminal figures.

Documents.

Shipments.

Accounts.

Evidence.

Victor smiled.

“You think you're untouchable because you're rich.”

Mason said nothing.

Victor turned toward Maya.

“But she isn't.”

Mason's eyes became terrifyingly calm.

“Don't.”

Victor smiled.

“That's your weakness.”

“No.”

Mason took one step forward.

“She isn't my weakness.”

Victor frowned.

“She is the reason you lose.”

Mason looked at Maya.

Then back at Victor.

“She is the reason I stop.”

The room went silent.

Victor's smile disappeared.

Mason's men moved.

The confrontation ended quickly.

Victor was restrained.

Evan was released.

And for the first time, Maya understood why people feared Mason.

He never shouted.

Never panicked.

Never needed to.

His authority came from something deeper.

Control.

Afterward, outside the warehouse, Evan apologized.

“Maya, I'm sorry.”

She hugged him.

“You're an idiot.”

“I know.”

Mason stood several feet away.

Maya approached him.

“You saved him.”

“He's your family.”

“You didn't have to.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because you asked.”

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“Mason.”

He stepped closer.

“I meant what I said.”

“What?”

“You're not my weakness.”

He touched her cheek.

“You're the reason I want to become someone worthy of standing beside you.”

Maya stared at him.

Then she kissed him.

It was supposed to be forbidden.

There was no reason.

No necessity.

No audience.

Just two people standing in the rain.

And Mason, the man who controlled half the city's shadows, finally allowed himself to stop controlling everything.

The Choice

Three weeks later, Maya ended the arrangement.

Not because she stopped caring.

Because she cared too much.

She met Mason at the same café where they had first spoken.

The corner table.

The same espresso.

The same rain.

Maya sat opposite him.

“I can't do this.”

Mason didn't move.

“I know.”

“You're not going to argue?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you need to choose freely.”

She swallowed.

“You're dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“Your world is dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“I don't want to spend my life looking over my shoulder.”

“I don't want that for you either.”

She looked down.

“Then why does this hurt?”

“Because what we had was real.”

Her eyes lifted.

“Was?”

Mason looked at her.

“I won't assume you want me.”

Maya laughed through tears.

“You're the most frustrating man I've ever met.”

“I've heard that.”

“I love you.”

Mason went still.

She hadn't planned to say it.

But once the words existed, she couldn't take them back.

“I love you,” she repeated.

His expression cracked.

Just slightly.

Then he stood.

Maya expected him to kiss her.

Instead, he took her hand.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

“You understand what my life is?”

“Yes.”

“You understand I can't promise there will never be danger?”

“Yes.”

“You understand that I will never lie to you again?”

“Yes.”

Mason exhaled.

“Then I love you too.”

Maya smiled.

“And the fake boyfriend arrangement?”

“Expired.”

“Good.”

“What do we call this?”

She thought about it.

“Dating.”

“Ordinary.”

“Try it.”

He nodded.

“I'll try.”

The following months changed both of them.

Mason began stepping away from the criminal organization.

Not overnight.

Not easily.

But deliberately.

He transferred control of remaining illegal operations to a trusted intermediary while negotiating exits.

He invested more heavily in legitimate logistics and security.

Maya opened a small bookstore.

She named it Bennett & Reed Books.

Mason complained about the name.

“You put your name first.”

“It's my bookstore.”

“Fair.”

The bookstore became popular.

Maya hosted poetry nights.

Local authors.

Children's reading events.

Community gatherings.

Mason sometimes sat in the back corner.

No suit.

Just a dark sweater.

A book in his hand.

Customers didn't know who he was.

Maya loved that.

One evening, she found him reading a children's mystery novel.

“You?”

He looked up.

“What?”

“Reading children's books.”

“Research.”

“For what?”

“Our future children.”

She froze.

“Mason.”

He smiled.

“You're blushing.”

“Stop.”

“I like it.”

She walked behind the counter.

“You're impossible.”

He closed the book.

“Maya.”

“Yes?”

“Come here.”

She did.

He reached into his pocket.

Her heart stopped.

“Mason.”

He opened a small box.

Inside was a simple ring.

Not enormous.

Not flashy.

Elegant.

“You don't have to answer tonight.”

Maya stared at him.

“Why are you saying that?”

“Because the first time I met you, you were pressured into bringing a man to your family wedding.”

He took her hand.

“I don't want to become another person pressuring you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“So?”

“So this isn't a business deal.”

He looked at her.

“It's a question.”

Maya laughed.

“You really prepared a speech.”

“Yes.”

“You practiced?”

“Several times.”
