THE MAN IN THE DUSTY BOOTS

 The Easy Target

The guy in the thousand-dollar sparring gear thought he had found an easy target.

That was his first mistake.

His second was assuming that silence meant weakness.

His third—and the one that would stay with him for the rest of his life—was laughing at the old cowboy.

It was a Friday evening at Iron Horse Combat Club, a private training facility on the edge of a small Texas town where ranch roads gradually gave way to warehouses, mechanic shops, and stretches of empty prairie.

The gym had once been an abandoned feed store.

Now it was one of the most expensive combat sports facilities in the county.

The walls were painted black. Heavy bags hung from steel beams. A professional boxing ring occupied the center of the main floor. Wrestling mats covered one side, while racks of weights, kettlebells, medicine balls, and conditioning equipment filled the other.

Friday nights belonged to the advanced fighters.

Amateur boxers came.

Former college wrestlers came.

MMA fighters came.

People who dreamed of becoming professionals came.

And then there was Travis Cole.

At twenty-seven, Travis was the kind of fighter who made sure everyone knew he was a fighter.

His gloves were custom-made.

His headgear cost more than some people's monthly rent.

His compression shirt carried the logo of a company that sponsored professional athletes.

His shoes were imported.

Even his mouthguard came in a silver case engraved with his initials.

Travis had won eleven amateur bouts and lost only two.

He had a fast right hand, excellent footwork, and enough confidence to make everyone around him tired.

He wasn't a bad fighter.

That was the problem.

He was good enough to believe he was great.

That evening, Travis had just finished three rounds of hard sparring when he noticed the old man sitting near the entrance.

The stranger had arrived twenty minutes earlier.

Nobody knew him.

He wasn't dressed for training.

He wore faded blue jeans, a weathered brown belt, a gray work shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, and boots covered in pale dust.

His hair was mostly gray.

His beard was trimmed short but uneven, as though he'd cut it himself.

A thin scar disappeared beneath his left eyebrow.

He sat with his elbows resting on his knees.

Watching.

He wasn't using his phone.

He wasn't talking.

He wasn't drinking anything.

He simply watched.

Travis noticed him between rounds.

"Who invited Grandpa?"

His training partner Mike glanced toward the door.

"Don't know."

Travis laughed.

"Guy looks like he got lost on his way to a cattle auction."

Mike laughed too.

The old man didn't react.

Travis wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Seriously. What is he doing here?"

Coach Raymond Parker looked across the gym.

Raymond was fifty-one, a former professional fighter whose career had ended after a shoulder injury. He had spent twenty years learning that the most dangerous people in a gym were often the ones who talked the least.

"I invited him," Raymond said.

Travis raised an eyebrow.

"You know him?"

Raymond nodded.

"Sort of."

That answer made Travis grin.

"Does he fight?"

Raymond looked at the old man.

"Yes."

"When?"

Raymond didn't answer.

Travis laughed again.

"Come on, Coach. Look at him."

The old man finally lifted his eyes.

His gaze met Travis's.

There was nothing aggressive in it.

No challenge.

No anger.

Just calm.

Travis expected the stranger to look away.

He didn't.

The two men stared at each other for three seconds.

Then the old man looked back toward the ring.

Travis smirked.

"See?"

Raymond's expression hardened.

"Leave him alone."

Travis shrugged.

"Wasn't planning anything."

But ten minutes later, he was.

The sparring schedule was nearly finished when Travis walked toward the old man.

He stopped a few feet away.

"You waiting for somebody?"
