Young fighters were hitting bags.

"I like seeing people become better."

Victor smiled.

"That's not the whole reason."

Arthur didn't answer.

Victor's smile disappeared.

"You're still haunted by what happened."

Arthur's eyes hardened.

"Don't."

Victor nodded.

"All right."

Arthur returned to work.

But the past had already begun moving toward him.

And Julian was about to become the person who opened the door.

 The Man Behind the Mop

The following Saturday, Apex hosted an advanced sparring session.

Professional fighters came from three different cities.

Several coaches attended.

Julian was there.

So was his father.

Julian had spent the week training harder than ever.

He wanted another chance.

Victor agreed to let him spar against a more experienced fighter.

The session began.

Julian performed well.

For the first few minutes.

Then he became reckless.

His opponent countered.

Julian stumbled backward.

His foot slipped.

He almost fell.

Arthur was cleaning near the cage.

Julian recovered.

"Don't touch me," he snapped when Arthur came closer.

Arthur stopped.

"I wasn't going to."

Julian looked embarrassed.

His opponent smiled.

"You good?"

Julian nodded.

The sparring continued.

Then disaster struck.

A veteran fighter named Darren Shaw threw a powerful kick.

Julian blocked it incorrectly.

His elbow twisted.

There was a loud crack.

Julian screamed.

The room went silent.

He dropped.

Victor rushed forward.

The medical staff followed.

Julian's father stood.

"Get him to a hospital!"

Arthur was already there.

He knelt beside Julian.

"Don't move your arm."

Julian was breathing rapidly.

"It hurts."

"I know."

"Don't touch it."

"I won't."

Arthur looked at Victor.

"Call emergency services."

Victor did.

Julian looked at Arthur.

For the first time, there was fear in his eyes.

Arthur stayed beside him until the ambulance arrived.

Later that evening, Julian underwent surgery.

The injury was serious.

His father blamed the gym.

The other fighters blamed Darren.

Julian blamed himself.

Arthur blamed nobody.

But then something unexpected happened.

A local sports journalist published an article about the accident.

The article mentioned that the first person to stabilize Julian had been "a mysterious Apex employee with apparent combat training."

Someone recognized Arthur.

Then another person did.

An old photograph surfaced online.

Arthur stood beside a championship belt.

Twenty years younger.

Lean.

Focused.

The caption read:

ARTHUR BROOKS — NATIONAL COMBAT SAMBO CHAMPION, 2003

The photograph spread.

Victor saw it.

His stomach dropped.

He had known.

But he'd never expected the past to return this way.

Julian saw it from his hospital bed.

He stared at the image.

Arthur.

The janitor.

Standing on a podium.

Holding a championship belt.

Julian searched the name.

More photographs appeared.

Arthur competing internationally.

Arthur training military personnel.

Arthur coaching fighters.

Then the records stopped.

Julian called Victor.

"Who is he?"

Victor was silent.

"Coach."

"Arthur was one of the best combat athletes of his generation."

Julian swallowed.

"Why does he clean floors?"

Victor sighed.

"Because he chose to."

"Why?"

"Because after his last fight, something happened."

"What?"

Victor hesitated.

"His opponent died."

Julian went silent.

Victor continued.

"It wasn't Arthur's fault. The medical investigation cleared him completely. But Arthur never forgave himself."

Julian looked at the photograph.

"What happened to the opponent?"

"Brain hemorrhage."

Julian stared at the ceiling.

"Does he still fight?"

"No."

"Can he?"

Victor answered softly.

"Yes."

Julian didn't speak for a long time.

Then he asked:

"Is he better than you?"

Victor smiled sadly.

"Yes."

That answer changed everything.

 The Challenge

Julian returned to Apex eight weeks later.

His arm was still recovering.

He couldn't spar yet.

But he came anyway.

Arthur was cleaning the same hallway.

Julian approached.

Arthur looked up.

"How's the arm?"

"Better."

"Good."

Julian stood there awkwardly.

"I saw the photograph."

Arthur nodded.
