The fluorescent lights of the penitentiary visitation room hummed with a sterile, unforgiving electric buzz, casting a pale and sickly pallor over the gray cinderblock walls. It was a room designed to strip away warmth, a purgatory built of reinforced concrete and thick, smudged bulletproof glass. Sitting on one side of this transparent divide was a man whose spirit had been battered by the relentless grind of institutional time. He wore the standard-issue bright orange jumpsuit, the synthetic fabric hanging loosely off his frame, a stark and jarring pop of color against the monochromatic bleakness of his surroundings. He looked to be in his early thirties, though the deep, dark shadows beneath his eyes and the hollow contours of his pale face aged him significantly. His brown hair was buzzed short, military style, offering no place to hide the raw vulnerability etched across his features.

In his trembling, calloused hands, he cradled a heartbreaking makeshift substitute for joy: a simple, dry slider bun. Placed perfectly in the center of the bread was a single, thin birthday candle, its tiny yellow flame flickering wildly with his every ragged breath. The fire illuminated the micro-expressions of pure agony on his face. Tears, heavy and unrestrained, cascaded down his cheeks, catching the meager light before dropping onto the stainless-steel table below.

On the other side of the glass, a world away yet inches from his fingertips, sat his wife. She was young, perhaps twenty-seven, her long, straight brown hair cascading over a simple, faded blue-gray t-shirt. Perched precariously on her head was a brightly colored, conical paper party hat—a desperate, vibrant attempt to conjure a festive atmosphere in a place devoid of one. She was fighting a losing battle against her own heartbreak, her lips stretched into a forced, trembling smile while her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. Clutched securely to her chest was their baby, no more than eight months old, dressed in soft pastel pink and wearing a miniature version of the mother’s party hat. The infant stared at the glowing flame through the glass, eyes wide with innocent wonder, completely shielded from the crushing tragedy of the space they occupied. Behind the man, a female correctional officer stood with military posture. Clad in a dark navy-blue uniform, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, severe bun, she remained a static, imposing figure of authority, her expression an impenetrable mask of duty.
