A distant rumble beneath his feet.

Then it grew louder.

Caleb stopped.

He turned.

Twenty motorcycles were coming down the road.

They moved together.

Perfect formation.

The sound was enormous.

Caleb's blood went cold.

He knew exactly who they were.

Hells Angels.

His first thought was simple.

They're here because of Bear.

His second thought was worse.

Maybe Bear died.

Maybe they blamed him.

Maybe they had come to punish him.

Caleb backed toward a chain-link fence.

The motorcycles slowed.

One by one, the engines stopped.

Silence fell.

A massive man removed his helmet.

Bear.

Caleb recognized him immediately.

Bear walked toward him.

Caleb closed his eyes.

He expected anger.

Instead, Bear placed both hands gently on his shoulders.

"You took a bad hit for me, kid."

Caleb opened his eyes.

Bear pulled him into a hug.

It was so unexpected that Caleb didn't know how to react.

"You saved my life."

Caleb looked around.

Twenty men were watching him.

No one laughed.

No one mocked him.

Every face carried the same expression.

Respect.

Bear turned toward them.

"Brothers."

He pointed toward Caleb.

"This is the kid who saved my life."

Twenty men nodded.

Caleb felt something inside him break.

For years, he had been invisible.

At school, he was the poor kid.

At work, he was the busboy.

In his neighborhood, he was the teenager who could barely afford groceries.

Now these intimidating men were looking at him as though he mattered.

Bear handed him a spare helmet.

"I heard you had to walk home."

Caleb looked down.

"My bike got destroyed."

"We know."

Bear gestured toward the motorcycles.

"Put the helmet on."

Caleb hesitated.

"I don't want to cause trouble."

Bear smiled.

"Trouble already found you."

He nodded toward the motorcycle.

"Get on."

For the first time in days, Caleb smiled.

He climbed onto the back.

The engine started.

And Caleb rode home with Bear.

Sarah was outside their trailer when the motorcycles arrived.

She froze.

Her hand covered her mouth.

There were motorcycles everywhere.

Leather.

Chrome.

Black denim.

Men who looked as though they belonged in a completely different world.

Then Caleb climbed off Bear's motorcycle.

"Caleb!"

Sarah ran toward him.

She hugged her son.

Then she looked at Bear.

"What happened?"

Bear removed his helmet.

"Ma'am, your son saved my life."

Sarah stared at him.

"He did what?"

Bear explained.

When he finished, Sarah began crying.

Not from fear.

From pride.

Bear reached inside his vest.

He pulled out an envelope.

"We heard about the bicycle."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

"Ma'am—"

"We can't take money."

Iron Mike stepped forward.

"This isn't charity."

Sarah looked at him.

Mike continued.

"Your son gave something first."

Sarah didn't understand.

Mike's voice softened.

"He gave us his courage."

He held out the envelope.

"We're only answering."

Sarah accepted it reluctantly.

Inside was enough money to replace the bicycle, cover medical expenses, and pay several months of rent.

Caleb stared.

"I can't believe this."

Bear smiled.

"Believe it."

Then he looked at Sarah.

"From now on, your son doesn't walk alone."

The Invisible Wall

The next morning, Caleb bought a reliable used Honda Civic.

For the first time, transportation wasn't a daily crisis.

His mother paid the overdue bills.

His ribs healed.

His eye returned to normal.

But something else had changed.

Caleb no longer felt completely alone.

He still attended classes.

He still worked.

He still studied.

But now, whenever he entered a room, he carried a strange new confidence.

Not arrogance.

Confidence.

Troy noticed.

And it drove him crazy.

Troy tried to confront Caleb in the cafeteria.

He approached with his usual swagger.

Caleb was eating lunch.

Troy reached for his tray.

Then stopped.
