Her hands trembled.

A younger version of Marcus stood beside another man.

Liz knew him immediately.

Her father.

“You knew him?”

Marcus nodded.

“Twenty-three years ago, your father saved my life.”

The street disappeared.

The motorcycles disappeared.

For a moment, there was only Liz and the photograph.

Marcus told her about the alley.

About the attack.

About waking in a hospital.

About the stranger who had stayed beside him until doctors said he would survive.

“I tried to find him,” Marcus said.

“Why didn’t he ever tell us?”

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Because he didn’t do it for recognition.”

Liz began crying.

Marcus placed a hand gently on her shoulder.

“Your father saved me because it was right.”

He looked into her eyes.

“And you defended Jacob for the same reason.”

Liz wiped her face.

Marcus pulled out an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“A beginning.”

Inside was a certified check.

Thirty-eight thousand four hundred dollars.

Liz stared at it.

“It covers the bank debt, your mother’s hospital bills, and enough money to keep the restaurant running.”

“I can’t accept this.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Mr. Williams—”

“Marcus.”

“Marcus, I don’t even know you.”

Marcus smiled.

“Family doesn't always begin with blood.”

Liz shook her head.

“I can't repay this.”

He looked toward the motorcycles.

“You don't have to.”

A younger man stepped forward.

“This is Tommy,” Marcus said. “He's a contractor.”

Tommy grinned.

“And I brought tools.”

Liz looked confused.

Then she saw trucks pulling up.

Lumber.

Paint.

Kitchen equipment.

Workers.

Marcus folded his arms.

“We’re fixing the restaurant.”

Liz covered her mouth.

“I can’t believe this.”

Marcus smiled.

“Believe it.”

Behind him, hundreds of bikers began unloading equipment.

The thunder had arrived.

And it had come to work.

The Day the Restaurant Became a Family

The next eight hours changed everything.

Motorcyclists became carpenters.

Electricians.

Painters.
