Tyler raised his voice.

"Don't they?"

A few younger fighters looked uncomfortable.

One nodded reluctantly.

Tyler smiled.

"See?"

Martin picked up the mop.

He looked at Sarah.

She shook her head.

"Don't."

Martin looked at Tyler.

Then toward the ring.

Finally, he said:

"One punch."

The room erupted.

Tyler smiled.

"That's all I wanted."

Frank stepped forward.

"Protective gear."

Tyler laughed.

"Of course."

Martin removed his work jacket.

Underneath was a plain gray shirt.

His body looked ordinary.

Thin.

Older.

Slightly bent.

Tyler grinned.

"This is going to be easy."

Martin climbed through the ropes.

The room changed.

He stood in the center of the ring.

Tyler entered opposite him.

The young boxer bounced lightly on his feet.

Martin simply stood.

Tyler shook his head.

"You don't even know how to stand."

Martin looked at his feet.

Then at Tyler.

"I know enough."

Frank stood outside the ring.

"One punch," he said.

Tyler raised his gloves.

"Ready?"

Martin nodded.

Tyler took a breath.

The gym became silent.

Sarah watched Martin.

Something about his posture had changed.

His shoulders had relaxed.

His eyes had sharpened.

The old janitor was gone.

In his place stood someone Sarah had never seen before.

Frank raised his hand.

"Go."

Tyler exploded forward.

His right hand came toward Martin's face.

Martin moved.

Not backward.

Not sideways.

Forward.

He slipped just outside the punch.

Tyler's glove passed within inches of his cheek.

Martin's left hand touched Tyler's shoulder.

Not a strike.

Just a touch.

Tyler stumbled past him.

The gym gasped.

Tyler turned.

"What—"

Martin was already standing behind him.

Calm.

Still.

Tyler's expression changed.

"Again."

Martin shook his head.

"One punch."

Tyler's pride wouldn't allow him to stop.

He charged again.

This time, Martin pivoted.

Tyler's punch cut through empty air.

Martin placed one hand against Tyler's chest.

A gentle push.

Tyler lost his balance and stumbled into the ropes.

The gym became completely silent.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody moved.

Tyler stared at Martin.

The old man looked exactly the same as before.

Except now everyone was looking at him.

Martin stepped back.

"You got your answer."

Tyler's face burned.

"No."

He pulled off his gloves.

"You got lucky."

Martin climbed through the ropes.

"Maybe."

Tyler followed.

"Do it again."

Martin shook his head.

"No."

Tyler grabbed his arm.

Martin looked down at the hand.

Then slowly looked up.

"Let go."

Tyler didn't.

Martin's voice remained calm.

"Tyler."

Something in that voice made Tyler release him.

Martin picked up his jacket.

Then left the ring.

Sarah followed him.

Behind them, Tyler stood frozen.

For the first time in three years, the entire gym had seen him fail to control a situation.

And Tyler Brooks could not tolerate that.

 What the Old Man Knew

The next morning, a video appeared online.

It had been recorded by one of the fighters.

The footage showed Tyler throwing a punch.

Then missing.

Then stumbling.

The clip was only fifteen seconds long.

But it spread quickly.

By noon, thousands of people had seen it.

Comments flooded in.

Who is the old guy?

Why didn't Tyler hit him?

Was it staged?

Is he a retired fighter?

Tyler was furious.

Amanda told him to ignore it.

He couldn't.

"This is my gym," Tyler said.

"No," Sarah replied from across the room.

Everyone turned.

Sarah stood with her arms crossed.

"This is Frank's gym."

Tyler glared.

"You got something to say?"

"Yes."

Sarah walked toward him.

"You've been bullying Martin for three years."

Tyler laughed.

"He works here."

"That doesn't give you the right to humiliate him."

Tyler looked around.

Nobody spoke.

Sarah continued.

"I watched you dump his cart."

Tyler's smile disappeared.

"I watched you knock over his bucket."

Silence.

"And I saw you block him in the equipment room."

Frank stepped forward.

"Sarah."

She ignored him.

"I kept records."

Tyler stared at her.

"What records?"

"Everything."

Tyler looked at Frank.

"You're going to let her do this?"

Frank rubbed his forehead.

"This has gone too far."

Sarah shook her head.

"No. It went too far years ago."

Martin stood in the doorway.

He had heard everything.

Sarah looked at him.

"Martin, you should tell them."

Martin shook his head.

"Tell them what?"

"The truth."

He smiled faintly.

"There are many truths."

"About who you are."

Martin looked around the gym.

Young fighters were staring at him.

Some looked embarrassed.

Others looked curious.

Martin sighed.

"I don't think my past belongs to this place."

Tyler laughed.

"Exactly."

Martin looked at him.

"You're right."

Tyler smiled.

Then Martin continued.

"But neither does your behavior."
