Collins had not asked for his boarding pass or his identification before grabbing his arm and announcing that he was being detained for a mandatory customs and security discrepancy check. Malcolm had allowed himself to be escorted without resistance because resisting a uniformed airport officer in a crowded public terminal without first establishing facts was amateurish. He knew how corrupt systems operated when panicked; they relied entirely on provoking a physical reaction so they could legally justify whatever fabricated charges followed. By remaining perfectly still, asking precise questions, and cataloging every camera angle in the corridor, Malcolm had turned their trap back onto them. Now, locked inside the glass interview room in handcuffs, he listened to the faint, steady hum of the overhead ventilation system. Captain Hale was pacing nervously near the stainless-steel table, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the tiled floor. Officer Collins stood near the closed door, staring intently at the floor as if hoping the concrete would swallow him whole. Hale stopped pacing and whirled around to face Malcolm. “You think you're some kind of untouchable big shot because you dropped buzzwords like chain-of-custody vulnerabilitiesand baggage-routing scans?” Hale sneered, leaning over the table. “Let me educate you on how reality works down here in the real world, Mr. Bennett. You landed in our jurisdiction with two keys of pure product locked inside your private luggage. The state police are going to seize your car, your bank accounts, and whatever fake credentials you’re hiding under that shirt. By tomorrow morning, you won't be auditing anybody; you'll be sitting in a county holding cell waiting for a public defender who doesn't give a damn about you.” Malcolm did not blink. He simply turned his head slightly to keep Hale centered in his field of vision. “Captain Hale, did you personally verify the physical chain of custody when Officer Collins brought this suitcase from the secondary screening room into this building?” Hale blinked, momentarily losing his rhythm. “Of course I did. Officer Collins logged it right into evidence.” “Did you personally inspect the security seal before Officer Collins cut it open?” Hale’s face hardened. “The bag was already unsealed when it was brought to my desk for the primary offense report.” Malcolm’s dark eyes flashed with quiet satisfaction. “Ah. So nobody actually witnessed the seal being broken in the presence of an independent witness or recorded on video.”

Hale’s voice rose in pitch and volume. “Are you accusing my officers of tampering with evidence?” “I am stating a verifiable fact based on your own admission: you did not personally witness the breach of a tamper-evident seal that I applied and photographed two hours prior in Washington.” Officer Collins suddenly shifted uncomfortably against the wall, clearing his throat in a high-pitched squeak. Hale shot a sharp, warning glare at his subordinate before turning back to Malcolm. “Your fancy legal games aren't going to fly here. We have the narcotics recovered directly from your personal luggage, we have your name on the baggage claim tag, and we have an active arrest booking ready to be filed with the magistrate judge within the hour.” Malcolm slowly straightened his posture, testing the metal cuffs behind his back with subtle, deliberate pressure. “Captain, before you sign that criminal complaint, I strongly suggest you pick up your secure desk phone and call the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Atlanta field office. Tell him you have Dr. Malcolm Bennett detained in your airport holding facility.” Hale burst into a loud, mocking laugh that sounded entirely forced. “Oh, sure! Let me just call the director of the FBI while I'm at it! What is your fantasy, Bennett? Are you going to tell me you’re some secret undercover operative on a top-secret mission?” Malcolm’s voice dropped into a register of absolute, freezing calm. “No. I am an internal affairs investigator who has spent the last three months auditing the illegal narcotics-seizure diversion rings operating out of this specific airport's cargo and baggage handling facilities.”
