“I didn't realize—”
“That is exactly the problem.”
Silence filled the room.
Charles opened his mouth.
Adrian raised one hand.
“No explanations yet.”
He turned to Malcolm.
“Did you witness the incident?”
“I witnessed what happened afterward.”
“Did you see Mr. Vance strike her?”
Malcolm hesitated.
“No.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Then tell me what you did see.”
Malcolm described the wallet.
The accusation.
The struggle.
The slap.
His voice became quieter as he reached the end.
Adrian listened without interrupting.
Then the door opened again.
Rachel Monroe stepped inside.
“Excuse me.”
Everyone turned.
Rachel held up her phone.
“I believe I can help.”
Charles immediately recognized her.
“You were recording?”
Rachel looked at him.
“Yes.”
His face hardened.
“You had no permission.”
Rachel smiled faintly.
“You struck an elderly woman in a public retail store. Permission is not the issue I would worry about.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Do you have the entire incident?”
“Most of it.”
She played the video.
The room became silent.
There was Charles’s voice.
The insults.
The accusation.
The wallet.
Eleanor’s attempts to retrieve it.
And then the slap.
No ambiguity.
No confusion.
No misunderstanding.
The recording showed Eleanor never striking Charles.
Not once.
When the video ended, Adrian remained silent.
Charles looked toward him.
“Mr. Hayes, I can explain.”
Adrian finally turned.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“That is not necessary.”
Charles’s face drained of color.
“You're suspended pending investigation.”
“Adrian—”
“Do not call me by my first name right now.”
Charles stared at him.
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
“We're going home.”
Eleanor stood.
Before leaving, she looked toward Jasmine, who was standing outside the office.
The young employee looked terrified.
Eleanor stopped.
“Jasmine.”
Jasmine approached.
“I’m sorry.”
Eleanor touched her arm.
“I know.”
“But I wrote what he told me.”
“I know.”
“I should have told the truth.”
Eleanor looked into her eyes.
“You will get another chance.”
Jasmine began to cry.
Eleanor squeezed her hand.
“Use it.”
Then she walked out beside Adrian.
Behind them, Rachel remained.
Malcolm remained.
Jasmine remained.
And Charles stood alone in the office, staring at the video on Rachel’s phone.
For the first time in six years, he understood something he had forgotten.
There was always someone above you.
Sometimes that person simply arrived fifteen minutes late.
The Name He Never Used
The following morning, Adrian sat in his office overlooking Manhattan.
Bellamy & Rowe occupied twenty-two floors of the building.
The company had stores across the country.
Thousands of employees.
Millions in annual sales.
And yet Adrian could think only about one red mark on his grandmother’s cheek.
His assistant knocked.
“Come in.”
She entered carrying a folder.
“Mr. Hayes, legal has reviewed the incident.”
Adrian nodded.
“What do they recommend?”
“Immediate termination for Mr. Vance.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
“Do it.”
“And security footage confirms the witness recording.”
“Good.”
“There is another issue.”
“What?”
“The employee, Jasmine Reed.”
Adrian looked up.
“What about her?”
“She says Charles pressured her to falsify the report.”
Adrian leaned back.
“Bring her in.”
Jasmine arrived twenty minutes later.
She looked frightened.
Adrian stood when she entered.
“Sit down.”
She sat.
“I want you to understand something,” Adrian said. “You're not here because you're in trouble.”
Jasmine looked surprised.
“I lied.”
“You were pressured.”
“I still wrote it.”
“Yes.”
She lowered her eyes.
Adrian continued.
“Fear does not excuse dishonesty. But fear explains why people sometimes make choices they regret.”
Jasmine looked up.
“Am I fired?”
“No.”
She exhaled.
“Why?”
“Because my grandmother told you that you would get another chance.”
Jasmine stared at him.
“Your grandmother?”
Adrian nodded.
“She asked me to give you one.”
Jasmine began crying again.
Adrian handed her a tissue.
“Use the opportunity well.”
After she left, Adrian called Malcolm.
“You protected her as much as you could.”
Malcolm looked uncomfortable.
“Not enough.”
“You stayed.”
“I should have stopped him.”
“Maybe.”
Malcolm lowered his eyes.
Adrian continued.
“But you eventually chose the truth.”
Malcolm nodded.
Adrian stood.
“I want you promoted.”
Malcolm looked up.
“Sir?”
“Head of security at the flagship.”
“I don't deserve that.”
“That isn't for you to decide.”
Malcolm smiled slightly.
“Your grandmother taught you that?”
Adrian smiled.
“Everything important.”
That afternoon, Adrian visited Eleanor.
She was sitting in her kitchen with the blue dress beside her.
The dress had been recovered from the store.
Eleanor looked at it.
“I still like it.”
Adrian laughed.
“Of course you do.”
“I was buying it for Camille.”
“I know.”
“You're going to replace it.”
“Absolutely.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
“Grandma.”
“No.”
“You were assaulted in my store.”
“Your store?”
Adrian froze.
Eleanor slowly looked at him.
Adrian realized his mistake.
“You said Bellamy & Rowe was just retail.”
“I said I worked in retail.”
“You founded the company.”
“Yes.”
“You own it.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor stared at him.
Then she laughed.
Not angrily.
Just incredulously.
“All these years?”
Adrian sat across from her.
“I didn't want anyone treating you differently.”
“You should have known better.”
“I know.”
She shook her head.
“Your grandfather would have laughed at you.”
“He probably would.”
Eleanor looked toward the blue dress.
“Do you know what bothered me most?”
