The morning I found Karen Petton’s white luxury SUV buried to its doors in Nebraska mud, I did not touch it.

I did not push it. I did not tow it. I did not place it there.

Karen had driven past six warning signs, moved two traffic cones, ignored a locked farm gate, and crossed a strip of ground explicitly marked: DRAINAGE RESTORATION AREA — NO VEHICLES. Then, the soil beneath her expensive tires gave way.

The front end of the SUV sat at a downward angle, buried in thick brown clay. One side mirror hung from its wiring. Mud covered the windshield in broad streaks, and the chrome wheels had disappeared almost completely. A sticker on the rear window proudly declared her status: GREEN MEADOWS HOA BOARD MEMBER.

Below it, a decorative decal hung on by a single corner. It had once said: LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE. The mud had completely covered the last word.

I stood at the edge of the field holding a steaming cup of coffee, listening to Karen scream into her phone.

"This man trapped me!" she yelled.

Sheriff Dale Morrison looked from her to the signs, then toward the deep tire tracks leading directly from my locked gate to the sunken vehicle.

"Ma’am," the sheriff said, his voice a calm drawl, "it appears you drove into a drainage trench."

"He created it because of me!"

"It was permitted by the county."

"He knew I would come through here!"

I took a slow drink of my coffee. "That may be the first accurate thing she has said all morning."

Karen spun toward me, her heels sinking into the soft earth. "You think this is funny?"

"No." I looked past her to the damaged rows of earth. "I think it took you six months to discover that private property eventually stops being convenient."
