“That is why I installed the signs.”

“You left no access!”

“There isn't supposed to be access.”

“I had a board meeting!”

“You have a road.”

“It takes seven extra minutes!”

I stared at her.

Six months of arguments.

Damaged crops.

A dead calf.

Legal letters.

Sheriff warnings.

A locked gate.

All because seven minutes was apparently too much inconvenience.

Karen pulled out a document.

“This is a certified cease-and-desist.”

I looked at it.

It was signed by Karen herself.

She was ordering me to remove my own gate.

“You can't do this,” she shouted.

“This is my land.”

Then Sheriff Morrison arrived.

 The Evidence Speaks

Morrison examined the signs.

Then the cut chain.

Then the bolt cutters.

“Mrs. Petton, did you cut the gate?”

“I removed an illegal obstruction.”

“Did the owner give you permission?”

“The HOA has access rights.”

“No, it doesn't.”

Karen pointed toward the drainage swale.

“He knew I would drive here!”

Morrison turned toward me.

“County permit?”

I handed him the documents.

“Inspection records?”

I handed those over too.

“Notice sent to her?”

“Certified mail and email.”

Morrison looked at Karen.

“You signed for the notice twelve days ago.”

“That doesn't make this safe.”

“It told you it was unsafe.”

Karen's voice became louder.

“You're taking his side!”

“I'm reading the evidence.”

He opened his citation book.

Karen froze.

“What are you doing?”

“I am issuing a citation for criminal trespass and property damage to the gate.”

“You can't cite me!”

“I warned you personally.”

“This is retaliation!”

Morrison shook his head.

“No. Retaliation would be Mr. Chen destroying your property after you damaged his.”

He pointed toward the SUV.

“This is mud.”

Karen called her husband.

“Richard, get out here. Marcus trapped my SUV.”

There was a long silence.

Then her husband's voice came through the phone.

“Karen... why are you on his land again?”

Her expression changed.

“There is no HOA route,” Richard continued.

“I told you that last week.”

Karen lowered the phone.

For the first time, she had nowhere left to point.

 The Authority Disappears

Karen called Harold, the HOA president.

“I need legal counsel immediately.”

“Where are you?”

“At Chen's farm.”

“Why?”

“My vehicle is stuck.”

“Did you enter through the locked gate?”

Karen said nothing.

Harold sighed.

“The board removed you from the access committee yesterday.”

Karen's face went pale.

“You can't remove me without a vote.”

“We voted.”

She stood silently.

Then Harold delivered the final blow.

“The association is issuing a formal statement that you acted individually. Green Meadows does not claim access across the Chen property.”
