Isaiah looked down at the finger.

Then back into Cole’s eyes.

He spoke so softly only the nearest microphone caught it.

“You’ve never met my level.”

The clip exploded online.

By Friday night, people were finally asking who Isaiah Reed was.

They found old fight footage.

They found grainy videos from small Maryland venues.

They found footage of him coaching students.

They found a regional wrestling championship from when he was twenty.

They found a photograph of him at twenty-two wearing military fatigues while serving as a combat engineer in Afghanistan.

They discovered something Cole’s management apparently had not considered important.

Isaiah Reed had been fighting difficult men in difficult places for most of his adult life.

At 9:47 p.m., Isaiah stood in the tunnel beneath the Meridian Arena.

Eighteen thousand people waited on the other side.

Andre stood behind him carrying the corner bag.

Denise had insisted the boy be allowed to come.

“Maybe seeing professional fighting up close will cure him of wanting to do it,” she had said.

It had not.

Andre looked terrified and thrilled.

“Coach?”

Isaiah turned.

“You nervous?”

“Yeah.”

“Good.”

Andre blinked.

“Good?”

“Nerves mean you understand something matters.”

The arena announcer’s voice thundered through the concrete.

Isaiah’s music started.

He rolled his shoulders once.

Then he walked toward the light.

Nobody in the arena knew it yet.

But the fight everyone had been told was a formality was about to become the night people talked about for years.

And Cole Maddox was about to discover that confidence and preparation were not the same thing.

Cole made Isaiah wait.

It was deliberate.

Isaiah entered the cage first and stood in his corner while Cole’s introduction lasted nearly six minutes.

Lights went dark.

Gold lasers crossed above the crowd.

A video showed Cole knocking opponents unconscious.

Then came the music.

Cole walked slowly toward the cage wearing a gold robe while his entourage followed behind him.

Andre leaned toward Isaiah.

“This dude really brought a throne graphic.”

Isaiah almost smiled.

“Watch his hips when he throws the right hand.”

Andre blinked.

“What?”

“You’re here to learn.”

Even now, Isaiah refused to participate in the spectacle.

Cole climbed into the cage.

He removed the robe.

The crowd exploded.

The referee called both fighters forward.

“Protect yourselves at all times. Obey my commands. Fight clean.”

Cole stared directly at Isaiah.

“Touch gloves if you want.”

Isaiah lifted his glove.

Cole looked at it.

Then laughed and walked backward.

Boos mixed with cheers.

Isaiah returned to his corner.

Andre slid the mouthguard toward him.

“You know what to do.”

Isaiah inserted it.

Denise was somewhere in the crowd.

Hundreds of people from East Harbor were watching on televisions back home.

Children at the gym had organized a viewing party.

But the strange thing was, Isaiah felt none of it.

Once the cage door closed, the world became small.

Cole.

The referee.

Distance.

Breathing.

Feet.

Timing.

That was all.

The bell rang.

Cole moved first.

Fast.

Faster than Isaiah expected.

He threw a jab and immediately followed with a hard right kick toward Isaiah’s ribs.

Isaiah blocked.

The impact cracked through the arena.

Cole grinned.

“Felt that.”

Isaiah said nothing.

Cole jabbed again.

Then another kick.

Isaiah stepped backward.

The crowd roared.

To casual viewers, it looked exactly as predicted.

Young superstar pressing forward.

Older replacement fighter retreating.

Cole pointed at him.

“Come on!”

Isaiah watched.

Cole stepped in with a right hand.

Isaiah slipped outside and touched him with a short jab.

Nothing dramatic.

Cole barely reacted.

But Andre did.

He knew that jab.

It was not meant to hurt.

It was a ruler.

Isaiah was measuring range.

Cole attacked again.

One-two.

Left hook.

Isaiah blocked two punches and absorbed part of the hook.

The crowd grew louder.

Cole began talking.

“This all you got?”

Isaiah circled.

Cole followed.

“You scared?”

Another jab from Isaiah.

This one landed clean.

Cole’s head moved slightly.

His smile disappeared for half a second.

Then he rushed forward with a combination.

Isaiah changed levels.

Cole sprawled.

But Isaiah had never intended to complete the takedown.

He simply touched Cole’s lead leg and moved away.

Cole stood.

“What was that?”

Isaiah stared at him.

Data.

That was what it was.

Thirty seconds later, Isaiah tried the same level change.

Again, Cole reacted aggressively.

Hands dropped.

Hips moved backward.

Chin rose.

Isaiah noticed.

His corner noticed.

Cole did not.

Two minutes into the round, Cole landed a hard body kick.

Isaiah exhaled sharply.

Cole heard it.

“There it is.”

He stepped closer.

“That old body doesn’t like that.”

Isaiah circled toward the fence.

Cole attacked.

Right hand.

Left hook.

Knee.

Isaiah blocked most of it, but the knee touched his ribs.

The crowd stood.

Cole smelled weakness.

He launched another right hand.

Isaiah ducked.

Cole’s momentum carried him forward.

Isaiah wrapped his waist.

For the first time that evening, Cole’s feet left the floor.

Isaiah turned him and dumped him onto the canvas.

The arena gasped.

Cole scrambled immediately.

He was athletic.

Very athletic.

He regained his feet before Isaiah could establish control.

But something had changed.

Isaiah had made him look ordinary for three seconds.

Cole hated that.

He shoved Isaiah after they separated.

“Lucky.”

The referee warned him.

Isaiah returned to stance.

Cole moved forward harder.

That was the first mistake.

The second came ten seconds later.

Isaiah changed levels again.

Cole dropped his hands to defend.

Isaiah stood upright instead.

Left hook.

The glove crashed against Cole’s jaw.

Not enough to knock him down.

Enough to freeze him.

Isaiah followed with a straight right.

Cole stumbled backward.

The crowd erupted.

Isaiah did not chase wildly.

He walked forward.

Cole threw a desperate hook.

Isaiah slipped.

Another straight right landed.

Cole hit the fence.

For the first time in his professional career, fear entered his face.

It lasted less than a second.

But cameras caught it.

Isaiah stepped into the clinch.

Knee to the body.

Short elbow.

Cole tried to turn away.

Isaiah hooked a leg.

Cole fell.

Isaiah followed him to the ground.

Twenty seconds remained.

Cole covered his head.

Isaiah landed controlled punches.

The referee leaned close.

“Fight back!”

Cole grabbed Isaiah’s wrist.

Ten seconds.

Nine.

Eight.

Isaiah trapped an arm.

Cole twisted.

The horn sounded.

Round over.

Isaiah stood immediately.

Cole remained seated for two seconds before his corner pulled him up.

The arena sounded different now.

Not quieter.

Confused.

People had arrived to watch a coronation.

Instead they had watched the king lose a round.

In Cole’s corner, his coach shouted.

“What are you doing?”

Cole spat water.

“He caught me.”

“You’re fighting angry.”

“He got lucky.”

“He took you down twice.”

“He got lucky twice.”

Across the cage, Isaiah sat calmly.

Andre pressed ice against his shoulder.

“You hurt him.”

Isaiah shook his head.

“He’s dangerous.”

“He looked scared.”

“Forget his face.”

Andre leaned closer.

“What do you see?”

Isaiah looked across.

Cole’s chest was rising too quickly.

“He’s trying to win the argument instead of the fight.”

The second round began.

Cole exploded forward.

Exactly as Isaiah expected.

He threw a spinning kick.

Missed.

Isaiah attacked the body.

Cole backed away.

Isaiah jabbed.

Right hand.

Cole answered with a left.

It landed clean.

Isaiah’s head snapped sideways.

Denise stood from her seat.

Cole smiled.

“There you are.”

He attacked again.

Another right hand landed.

Isaiah’s legs stiffened briefly.

Cole saw it.

He rushed.

Isaiah moved toward the fence.

Cole unleashed punches.

The arena became thunder.

One punch slipped through.

Isaiah’s vision flashed white.

For a fraction of a second, the cage doubled.

The old headache returned.

Denise’s warning entered his mind.

Protect yourself.

Isaiah covered.

Moved.

Breathed.

Cole threw another hook.

Isaiah ducked underneath.

Clinch.

He pressed Cole against the cage.

The crowd booed.

Isaiah did not care.

He held position.

Recovered.

Cole whispered against his ear.

“You’re done.”

Isaiah’s vision cleared.

He answered quietly.

“No.”

Then he changed position and dragged Cole to the mat.

Cole cursed.

Isaiah took his back.

One hook.

Then the second.

Cole tried to stand.

Isaiah flattened him.
