Silas did not flinch.
Before Tommy could make another accusation, the cabin door opened slightly. Chloe’s weak voice emerged from inside.
“Tommy?”
The biker froze.
Chloe stepped into view with the newborn wrapped against her chest. She leaned against the doorway, exhausted but smiling.
Tommy crossed the porch in three long strides.
He dropped to his knees before her, his shoulders shaking as he touched the baby’s blanket. Chloe placed her uninjured hand against his bearded face.
“He saved us,” she whispered. “They found the cabin during the night, and Silas sent them away. Then he delivered our son.”
Tommy looked at the newborn.
The child’s tiny hand emerged from the blanket and closed around one of his fingers.
The feared president of the Iron Saints began to sob.
He pressed his forehead against Chloe’s hand and remained there until his breathing steadied. Around the clearing, hardened bikers lowered their eyes, giving the family privacy.
When Tommy finally stood, he faced Silas.
“You saved my whole world.”
Silas placed one gentle hand on his arm. “She saved herself. I only opened the door.”
“Why would you risk your life for people you had never met?”
Silas looked toward Chloe and the baby.
“A gentle soul never asks who deserves saving.”
Tommy embraced him.
The biker’s enormous arms nearly lifted the old man from the porch. Silas tolerated the hug for several seconds before tapping Tommy firmly on the back.
