“Eleanor.”

He closed his eyes.

“My marriage was already falling apart.”

“Because of my mother?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Because I was obsessed with work.”

Emma waited.

Richard continued.

“Your mother and I became close.”

Emma's jaw tightened.

“Were you having an affair?”

Richard didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Emma looked away.

“So I'm an affair child.”

Richard shook his head.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I loved your mother.”

Emma stared at him.

“And she loved you?”

“She did.”

“Then why didn't you marry her?”

“Because my wife found out.”

Richard's voice became quieter.

“She threatened to destroy us.”

“Did she?”

“Not directly.”

“Then who did?”

Richard looked at Emma.

“My brother.”

“Your brother?”

“Victor Weston.”

Emma had never heard the name.

Richard continued.

“He believed your birth would destroy the Weston family.”

“Why?”

“Because he was supposed to inherit everything.”

Emma's eyes widened.

“And I changed that?”

“Yes.”

Richard's hand trembled.

“When you were born, I wanted to acknowledge you.”

“But?”

Victor intervened.

He convinced the family lawyers that my relationship with your mother was unstable.

Then he used the custody dispute to separate us.

“What happened?”

“Your mother disappeared with you.”

“Why?”

“She believed I was going to take you away permanently.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted joint custody.”

“Then why did she change my name?”

“I don't know.”

Emma stared at him.

“My mother told me my father died in an accident.”

“He did.”

“Was it an accident?”

Richard hesitated.

“That is what we believed.”

Emma felt the room become colder.

“What does that mean?”

Richard reached toward the bedside table.

He took out an old envelope.

“I found this after your father died.”

Emma opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only six words were visible.

She knows about the Weston account.

Emma looked up.

“What account?”

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Before he could explain further, the hospital door opened.

A police officer entered.

“Mr. Weston.”

Richard looked at him.

“What is it?”

“We found your shooter.”

Emma stood.

“Where?”

The officer looked at her.

“She was seen near the old Weston shipping warehouse.”

Richard's face went pale.

“What did she do?”

“She left something behind.”

The officer placed a photograph on the table.

It showed an old metal box.

On the lid was a single word.

EMMA.

The Missing Twenty Years

The warehouse stood near the abandoned docks.

It had belonged to Weston Shipping before the company was sold.

Emma went there with Detective Harris.

Richard remained in the hospital under heavy security.

The box was found inside a locked office.

There were no fingerprints.

No useful DNA.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Emma at five.

Emma at seven.

Emma at ten.

Emma at thirteen.

Emma at sixteen.

Emma at eighteen.

She stared at the photographs.

Someone had been watching her entire life.

“How?”

Detective Harris studied the evidence.

“Your mother may have kept surveillance records.”

“Why?”

“That is what we need to determine.”

Emma picked up a photograph from when she was eight.

She was standing outside her school.

A man was visible across the street.

She recognized him.

“That's my uncle.”

“Victor Weston?”

“Yes.”

Detective Harris looked closer.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Emma remembered him.

A man who had appeared twice during her childhood.

She had always thought he was one of her mother's friends.

She suddenly felt sick.

“Why was he following me?”

“We don't know.”

Another photograph showed Emma at sixteen.

Another man stood behind her.

Emma recognized him too.

“That's my school principal.”

Harris frowned.

“He was working for Victor.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he was arrested five years ago for financial fraud involving Weston companies.”

Emma looked at the photographs.

Her entire childhood suddenly looked different.

Maybe she had never been alone.

Maybe she had never been unobserved.

Maybe the people she trusted had been part of something much larger.

Then Harris found a small USB drive.

It contained one video.

They opened it.

Lisa appeared on screen.

She looked exhausted.

“Emma, if you're watching this, something has gone wrong.”

Emma stopped breathing.

Lisa continued.

“I need you to understand something. I didn't leave you because I didn't love you.”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“I left because I was afraid they would kill you.”

The video continued.

“Your father discovered that Victor was stealing money from Richard's companies.”

Emma looked at Harris.

He leaned closer.

“Daniel found evidence.”

Lisa's voice trembled.

“He planned to expose him.”

The video showed several documents.

Bank transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Shell companies.

Millions of dollars.

“Victor found out.”

Lisa paused.

“Then Daniel died.”

Emma whispered:

“My father was murdered.”

The video continued.

“I couldn't prove it.”

Lisa looked directly into the camera.

“Richard wanted to help me, but by then Victor had control of almost everything.”

Emma's heart raced.

“I knew that if Richard publicly acknowledged you, Victor would come after you.”

“So I disappeared.”

“I changed your name.”

“I told you your father died.”

“I lied about everything.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Lisa began crying on the screen.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

The video ended.

Silence.

Emma stared at the blank screen.

For twenty-four years, she had believed her mother had been distant.

Cold.

Secretive.

Now she realized there might have been another explanation.

Her mother had been afraid.

Terrified.

And perhaps she had spent two decades protecting Emma from a family Emma didn't even know existed.

Harris spoke quietly.

“There's more.”

He inserted another drive.

A file appeared.

WESTON FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY: EMMA CARTER.

Emma stared.

“What is that?”

Harris opened it.

The document showed that Richard had established a trust for Emma before she was born.

The value was enormous.

Emma's hands shook.

“Why would he do that?”
