This one was entirely different.
It was a long, obsidian-black, custom Maybach executive limousine with deeply tinted privacy glass. The metallic paint seemed to absorb the lingering golden light of the sunset, radiating an understated, terrifying aura of immense wealth and untouchable authority.
It didn't swerve or screech. It glided smoothly along the curb, stopping with absolute mathematical precision right alongside Clara’s small wooden sandwich cart.
The crowd stepped back instinctively, clearing a wide radius around the imposing vehicle. Even Eleanor Thorne’s driver straightened his spine, his professional eyes widening in immediate recognition of the vehicle’s ultra-exclusive custom license plate.
The rear door of the Maybach clicked softly and swung open.
Two tall men in tailored dark charcoal suits stepped out first. They wore small, discreet earpieces and possessed the calm, vigilant eyes of high-level private security specialists. They quickly scanned the perimeter, standing at absolute attention on either side of the open door.
Then, an older gentleman stepped out onto the cobblestone.
He appeared to be in his late sixties, with snow-white hair neatly combed back, wearing an exquisite three-piece bespoke Savile Row suit. He carried a silver-topped mahogany walking stick, though he moved with the upright, effortless vigor of a man who commanded respect wherever he walked. His presence alone was so commanding that even the whispering crowd fell completely silent.
It was Arthur Vance—the founder, chairman, and legendary patriarch of Vance Global Enterprises.

Arthur Vance adjusted his suit jacket, his sharp gray eyes sweeping over the scene. He ignored the gasping crowd, ignored the luxurious sedan parked improperly on the curb, and completely bypassed Eleanor Thorne, who stood paralyzed in absolute shock.
He walked straight toward the small, wooden sandwich cart.
Clara stepped forward out of her apron’s straps, unbuckling the canvas ties and dropping the simple garment onto the counter of her cart. Beneath it, her posture was faultless, her shoulders square, her head held high with an unmistakable, regal confidence.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Grandfather," Clara said casually, her voice smooth and entirely relaxed.
The older man stopped two paces away. He didn't scold her for standing on a sidewalk, nor did he look down at her flour-dusted clothes. Instead, he bowed his head slightly in a gesture of profound respect that stunned every single person watching.
"Not at all, Miss Vance," Arthur replied, his deep, gravelly voice echoing clearly through the quiet park. "Everything is ready. The board has been assembled at headquarters, and the acquisition papers for the district’s commercial properties are awaiting your final signature."
The word hung in the air like a thunderbolt.
Miss Vance.
Eleanor Thorne’s breath hitched in her throat. Her face instantly drained of all color, turning a sickly, ghostly pale. Her hands began to tremble so violently that her pearl bracelet rattled against her wrist.
"Vance..." Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible. "Arthur... Vance?"
She knew the name. Every real estate developer, every corporate executive, and every wealthy family in the entire region knew that name. Vance Global Enterprises didn't just operate in the city—they owned the city. They owned the skyscrapers, the banking towers, the construction firms, the municipal bonds, and the very land beneath their feet.
Vanguard Design Studios—the firm where her son worked, the firm whose board Eleanor had spent five years trying to court—was merely a small subsidiary under the vast umbrella of the Vance Global empire.
Julian stood utterly frozen, staring at Clara as if he were seeing her for the very first time. His mouth was slightly open, his mind struggling to reconcile the quiet, hardworking girl who made his sandwiches with the heiress of the largest financial dynasty in the state.
"...What is going on?" Julian managed to ask, his voice hoarse and completely disbelieving. "Clara... who are you?"
Clara turned back to face him. The cold, distant composure she had displayed toward his mother vanished completely, replaced once again by the soft, genuine warmth she had always shown him.
She walked up to Julian, reaching out to take both of his trembling hands into her own.
