Someone was using his own security system against him.

Then Daniel sent another message.

There's something else.

What?

Your company accounts show unusual transfers connected to a subsidiary in Connecticut.

Adrian froze.

Which subsidiary?

Whitmore Estate Management.

Adrian looked toward the mansion.

His own house.

His own employees.

His own money.

Someone was moving funds through the estate.

The mansion wasn't just being used to steal valuables.

It might be part of a much larger scheme.

That evening, Adrian stayed near the servants' entrance.

Grace came outside.

She looked worried.

"Something happened."

"What?"

"Mrs. Eleanor is upset."

"Why?"

"She discovered that some of the household records were altered."

"Which records?"

"Payroll."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Payroll?"

Grace nodded.

"Some employees were listed as working more hours than they actually worked."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Who has access?"

Grace hesitated.

"Victor."

Adrian looked toward the house.

"Anyone else?"

"Mr. Malcolm Reed."

Adrian's head turned sharply.

"Malcolm?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"He came here yesterday."

Adrian stared.

Malcolm Reed was his senior advisor.

The man who had warned him that employees feared him.

The man who had stood in his office three days before Adrian disappeared.

The man Adrian trusted more than almost anyone.

Adrian suddenly remembered the conversation.

Fear is more reliable.

Was Malcolm involved?

He didn't want to believe it.

But the evidence was beginning to form a pattern.

Victor.

Raymond Cross.

Estate accounts.

Altered payroll.

And possibly Malcolm.

Then Grace touched his arm.

"You should leave."

"Why?"

"I heard Victor talking."

"What did he say?"

"He said someone was asking questions."

Adrian's heart stopped for a moment.

"About me?"

Grace shook her head.

"No."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"About the missing records."

A car engine started behind the house.

Adrian turned.

A black sedan rolled slowly toward the rear gate.

Victor was driving.

And in the passenger seat sat Malcolm Reed.

Adrian watched them disappear into the darkness.

He stood motionless.

His experiment had begun with one question:

Would people treat a powerless man with dignity?

Now he had another.

Who had been betraying him while he was busy controlling everyone else?

The Truth Behind the Gate

The following day, Adrian made a decision.

He would stay hidden.

But he would stop pretending he was helpless.

He began documenting everything.

Every delivery.

Every unauthorized visitor.

Every security override.

Every conversation he could hear.

Grace helped him.

She did not know his true identity, but she understood that something serious was happening.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked.

"Because people are being hurt."

She looked at him.

"People?"

"Employees."

Grace nodded.

"Then I will help."

By Friday afternoon, Adrian had enough evidence to confront someone.

But he still didn't know whom to trust.

So he created a trap.

He gave Grace a false piece of information.

She would tell Victor that an external auditor was arriving Monday morning to examine estate accounts.

If Victor was innocent, nothing would happen.

If he was involved, someone would panic.

Grace agreed.

The information reached Victor within two hours.

That night, Victor made a phone call.

Adrian recorded it.

"We have a problem," Victor said.

A voice answered.

"How serious?"

"Someone is checking the accounts."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Then find out."

"And if I can't?"

Silence.

Then:

"Make the problem disappear."

Adrian's expression became cold.

He recognized the voice.

Malcolm Reed.

His own advisor.

His own friend.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For years, Malcolm had been beside him.

Board meetings.

Acquisitions.

International negotiations.

Crises.

Private dinners.

Adrian had trusted him.

Perhaps too much.

The next morning, Adrian confronted Malcolm.

Not as Adrian Whitmore.

As the beggar.

Malcolm was walking toward the mansion when Adrian stepped from behind a hedge.

"Excuse me."

Malcolm stopped.

He looked annoyed.

"What do you want?"

"Food."

"Go away."

"I know what you're doing."

Malcolm's face changed.

"What?"

"I know about the accounts."

Silence.

Then Malcolm stepped closer.

"You don't know anything."

"I know enough."

Malcolm grabbed Adrian by the collar.

"Listen carefully."

Adrian remained completely calm.

"You have no idea who you're talking to."

Malcolm laughed.

"Neither do you."

He released him.

"People like you should learn when to disappear."

Then he walked away.

Adrian watched him.

His hands clenched.

For the first time in years, anger burned through him.

But he didn't react.

He waited.

That evening, Grace found him.

"You look different."

"How?"

"Angry."

"I am."

"Did he hurt you?"

"No."

Grace studied him.

"Who was that?"

"Someone I used to trust."

She sat beside him.

"Trust can be expensive."

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

Grace smiled sadly.

"My father used to say something else."

"What?"

"Sometimes losing the wrong person is how you make room for the right ones."

Adrian looked away.

The words stayed with him.

Later that night, he entered the mansion through an unlocked service door.

He moved silently through the corridors.

He knew the house better than anyone.

Behind the library was a small office.

Inside, he found what he was looking for.

A hidden safe.

He entered the combination.

The safe opened.

Inside were documents.

Contracts.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

And one folder labeled:

WHITMORE GLOBAL — SUCCESSION PLAN.

Adrian opened it.

His blood ran cold.

Someone had created a plan to remove him from control of his own company.

The documents included forged medical records, fabricated evidence of financial misconduct, and a proposed board resolution declaring Adrian "temporarily incapable of managing the corporation."
