"“You said my family would suffer if I refused.”

The recorded sentence passed through the music hall with the intimacy of a whisper and the reach of a verdict.

For one suspended second, nobody moved.

The string quartet had already lowered their bows. Candle flames trembled in the wall sconces. Beyond the tall arched windows, evening had turned Lake Como the color of tarnished silver. Nearly two hundred guests sat beneath the chandeliers of Villa Bellandi, surrounded by white roses, polished walnut, and the expensive assurance that nothing unexpected could happen in a room arranged this carefully.

At the altar, Matteo Bellandi’s smile disappeared.

His mother, Livia, lifted one hand to the pearls at her throat.

Elena Rinaldi stood between them and the open double doors, her bouquet held at her waist. White peonies, pale blush roses, eucalyptus, a wide ivory ribbon. One tear remained on her cheek. She did not wipe it away.

The green light beneath the ribbon was hidden, but she could feel the recorder’s hard rectangular edge against her fingers.
