Neighbors stood on porches.

Business owners arrived.

Farmers came in pickup trucks.

Parents brought older children.

The town had spent months whispering about Travis Cole.

Now they were finally looking directly at him.

Travis became nervous.

He turned toward the sheriff.

"Do something."

The sheriff looked at the crowd.

"I can't."

"You said you would."

"I said I'd handle it quietly."

Marcus heard that.

So did everyone else.

A murmur moved through the crowd.

The sheriff's face changed.

Marcus stepped forward.

"You just admitted it."

"I didn't admit anything."

"You did."

Marcus pointed toward Frank.

"Record everything."

Frank held up his phone.

The sheriff looked around.

He realized the situation had changed.

Too many witnesses.

Too many cameras.

Too many people.

Travis turned toward Emily.

"You did this."

Emily stepped backward.

Marcus moved between them.

"No."

Travis shouted.

"She ruined everything!"

Marcus's voice remained calm.

"You did that yourself."

Travis lunged.

The sheriff grabbed him.

For a moment, everyone froze.

Then Travis shouted:

"Let me go!"

The sheriff struggled.

"Calm down."

Travis swung.

His fist struck the sheriff.

The crowd gasped.

Two Iron Wolves moved instinctively, but Marcus raised one hand.

"Stay back."

The sheriff fell.

Travis ran.

He made it twenty feet before three townsmen blocked his path.

He turned.

Another group stood behind him.

There was nowhere to go.

He looked toward Marcus.

"You think you've won?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

He pointed toward the sheriff.

"I think the truth just started."

The next morning, state investigators arrived.

So did reporters.

The documents Emily had preserved were enough to trigger an immediate investigation.

The sheriff was suspended.

Travis was arrested.

But Harold Bennett was still missing.

That became the central question.

Where was he?

For two days, investigators searched.

The Iron Wolves remained in Red Hollow.

They slept at the motel.

They ate at a different restaurant.

And they waited.

On the third morning, a rancher found a vehicle abandoned near an old mining road.

It belonged to Harold.

Inside were traces of blood.

Emily nearly collapsed when she heard.

Marcus stayed beside her.

"We'll find him."

"What if he's dead?"

Marcus didn't lie.

"Then we'll bring him home."

The search expanded.

Volunteers joined.

Dogs were brought in.

Helicopters flew over the mountains.

At sunset, a search team discovered an abandoned storage shed six miles outside town.

Inside was a chair.

Rope.

A blanket.

And blood.

But no Harold.

Then Marcus noticed something.

A tire track.

Fresh.

He followed it behind the shed.

There, hidden beneath a pile of branches, was an old phone.

It belonged to Harold.

The phone had one unsent message.

Marcus read it.

"Emily, I'm sorry. I tried to stop him."

The message had been written six weeks earlier.

Marcus stared at it.

Six weeks.

Exactly when Harold disappeared.

He looked at the mountain.

"He's alive."

Frank frowned.

"How do you know?"

Marcus pointed.

"The phone was hidden."

"If Travis left it..."

"He didn't."

Marcus shook his head.

"Harold hid it."

They searched again.

Three hours later, they found an old service road leading toward a deserted logging camp.

There was a cabin at the end.

The door was locked.

Marcus knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

A weak voice came from inside.

"Who's there?"

Emily stepped forward.

"Uncle Harold?"

Silence.

Then:

"Emily?"

She began crying.

"It's me."

The door opened.

Harold Bennett stood there.

Thinner.

Bruised.

Bearded.

Alive.

Emily ran into his arms.

Harold held her tightly.

"I'm sorry."

She cried against his chest.

Marcus stood outside.

Harold looked at him.

"You came."

Marcus nodded.

"We did."

Harold looked at the motorcycles.

Then at the people behind them.

He smiled weakly.

"I knew someone would."

The Truth Comes Out

Harold spent two weeks in the hospital.

He had been beaten repeatedly.

Travis had forced him to sign documents transferring ownership of the diner.

The sheriff had helped cover it up.

But Harold had refused to cooperate.

He escaped during a storm and hid in the mountains.

He had survived on canned food and rainwater.

When investigators interviewed him, he told them everything.

The corruption went deeper than anyone expected.

Travis had been working with a property developer.

The plan was simple.

Force Harold out.

Take control of the diner.

Sell the land.

Make millions.

Emily had unknowingly inherited the property when her mother died.

That made her the final obstacle.

The bruises were not random.

They were warnings.

Fear was the weapon.

Silence was the strategy.
