"You made her walk out of here in the rain."

Tyler muttered, "We didn't make her."

Bear's eyes hardened.

"You humiliated her."

Tyler looked down.

"I said I was sorry."

"You haven't said it to her."

Tyler didn't answer.

Bear stepped back.

"Then you haven't finished."

For a moment, everyone expected something worse.

But Bear simply walked away.

He sat down at the booth beside Emily's empty seat.

Raven followed him.

Marcus sat across from them.

Jenny poured coffee.

"On the house."

Bear nodded.

"Thanks."

Then he looked toward the window.

"Where did she go?"

Jenny sighed.

"Probably home."

Bear looked thoughtful.

"Do you know her?"

"Her name is Emily. She comes here all the time."

"Family?"

"Her mother works at the hospital."

Bear nodded.

Then the diner door opened.

Everyone turned.

Emily stood in the doorway.

Her yellow sweater was damp.

Her hair was wet.

She looked exhausted.

She froze when she saw the bikers.

Her eyes widened.

Bear stood immediately.

But instead of approaching her aggressively, he smiled.

"Emily?"

She hesitated.

"Yes?"

"I'm Bear."

She looked at Jenny.

Jenny smiled.

"He's okay."

Bear chuckled.

"I promise."

Emily slowly entered.

Bear pointed to the booth.

"You want some pie?"

Emily blinked.

"Pie?"

"Cherry."

For the first time that afternoon, a tiny smile appeared on her face.

"Okay."

Bear pulled out the chair.

"Then sit down."

The Table Everyone Watched

Emily sat with the bikers.

At first, she barely spoke.

She expected questions.

She expected pity.

She expected someone to tell her how brave she was.

Instead, Marcus started telling a ridiculous story about getting lost on a motorcycle trip and accidentally spending three hours in the wrong town.

Raven laughed.

Jenny laughed.

Even Emily smiled.

Bear didn't mention the bullies.

He didn't mention her disability.

He didn't ask what had happened to her leg.

He simply treated her like another person sitting at the table.

Eventually, Emily relaxed.

"You guys travel a lot?"

Marcus grinned.

"Too much."

"Where have you been?"

"Almost everywhere."

Raven leaned toward Emily.

"Never believe him. He once got lost going to the grocery store."

"That happened once."

"Three times."

Emily laughed.

The sound surprised even her.

Bear watched quietly.

He remembered Hannah.

He remembered the first time his daughter had cried after someone called her names at school.

He remembered sitting beside her bed and telling her something he hoped she would never forget.

"The world doesn't get to decide your worth."

Now he looked at Emily.

"You know something?"

She looked up.

"What?"

"You don't have to become smaller because somebody else is cruel."

Emily looked down at her pie.

"I know."

Bear smiled.

"No. I don't think you do."

Emily was silent.

Then she whispered:

"Sometimes I feel like that's all people see."
