"I assume you've already been impressed by what we've built."

Olivia opened her portfolio.

"I've reviewed your financial statements, customer acquisition figures, intellectual property portfolio, employee retention data, and international expansion projections."

The room became quieter.

Leonard's smile faded slightly.

"You've done your homework."

"I always do."

One executive laughed.

"Well, then, this should be easy."

Olivia looked at him.

"Why?"

He hesitated.

"Because Terteranova is clearly an exceptional company."

"Exceptional companies usually don't need to announce that they're exceptional."

Nobody laughed.

Leonard cleared his throat.

"Let's focus on the investment."

Olivia closed her portfolio.

"I agree."

The meeting continued for another twenty minutes.

Leonard talked about growth.

His executives talked about market dominance.

They mentioned awards, patents, acquisitions, and projected profits.

Olivia listened.

But she was studying something else.

Who interrupted whom.

Who received eye contact.

Who was ignored.

Who was treated as important.

And who wasn't.

At 11:20, Leonard stood.

"Before we proceed, I'd like to introduce you to a few members of our staff."

Olivia followed him back into the larger conference room.

She still did not know what he intended.

But within minutes, she would find out.

And one sentence would change the entire meeting.

:::

"I Don't Shake Hands with Staff"

The larger conference room overlooked the city.

Floor-to-ceiling windows reflected the morning sun across a long polished table.

Six executives were already seated.

Leonard walked to the head of the table.

"Everyone, this is Olivia Johnson."

Olivia stepped forward.

One executive nodded.

Another barely looked up.

Then Leonard gestured toward her.

"She's here regarding the potential investment."

Olivia smiled.

"Good morning."

A younger executive stood.

Olivia extended her hand.

Before he could respond, Leonard raised a hand.

"No need."

Olivia looked at him.

Leonard smiled.

"I don't shake hands with staff."

Silence.

The younger executive slowly sat down.

Olivia's hand remained suspended for half a second.

Then she lowered it.

"I see."

Leonard chuckled.

"Don't take it personally."

"I'm not."

He turned toward the others.

"These investment people often have assistants come in first."

One executive laughed.

Olivia studied Leonard's face.

He genuinely believed she was an employee.

That amused her more than it offended her.

"I'm not staff," she said calmly.

Leonard laughed again.

"Then what are you doing in my building?"

Nobody moved.

Olivia opened her leather portfolio.

She removed a single document.

Then she placed it in the center of the table.

"I came to determine whether my firm should invest two billion dollars in Terteranova Technologies."

The laughter stopped.

Completely.

Leonard looked down.

His eyes moved across the document.

Then back to Olivia.

"You?"

"Yes."

One executive leaned forward.

"You're Olivia Johnson?"

"Yes."

"The Olivia Johnson?"

"I assume there aren't two of us."

Nobody smiled.

Leonard picked up the document.

His hand trembled slightly.

The first page contained the letter of intent.

**Proposed Investment: $2,000,000,000.**

At the bottom was the signature of Olivia Johnson, founder and managing partner of Johnson Capital Partners.

Leonard's face changed.

The color drained from it.

One of the executives whispered, "Oh my God."

Olivia remained standing.

"You asked what I was doing in your building."

She paused.

"I was deciding whether you deserved my money."

Leonard swallowed.

"Ms. Johnson, I—"

"No."

Her voice remained quiet.

"Don't apologize yet."

She walked to the chair opposite him and sat down.

"I want to finish the evaluation."

Leonard looked around the room.

His executives suddenly seemed very interested in the table.

Olivia folded her hands.

"Now, Mr. Harrison, let's discuss your company."

Leonard stared at her.

For the first time that morning, he looked uncertain.

Olivia had expected arrogance.

She had expected prejudice.

What she had not expected was how quickly confidence disappeared when money entered the room.

And she was not finished testing them.

:::

The Question Nobody Expected

Leonard tried to recover.

"Ms. Johnson, clearly there has been a misunderstanding."

"Perhaps."

"I didn't know who you were."

"That is precisely the problem."

He frowned.

Olivia turned toward the executives.

"How many employees does Terteranova have?"

"Approximately four thousand," one executive answered.

"And how many women hold vice-president-level positions?"

He hesitated.

"Seven."

"How many Black executives?"

Nobody answered.
