The evening sun cast long, amber shadows across the polished hardwood floors of the Seishin Dojo, a place renowned in the city for producing some of the most formidable martial artists. The air was thick with the scent of pine and sweat, resonating with the sharp, rhythmic kiai of students practicing their katas. At the center of the largest mat stood Kyle, a newly minted black belt whose ego had expanded far beyond his actual skill level. He was twenty-two, athletic, and possessed an arrogance that often rubbed the senior students the wrong way, though few bothered to correct him. He was, after all, a paying customer and a decent fighter.

In the periphery, moving silently along the edges of the room with a mop in hand, was Marcus. Marcus was a quiet Black man in his late fifties, his face lined with years of hard work and an unreadable expression. He had been the janitor at Seishin Dojo for as long as anyone could remember. He arrived before the sun came up and left long after the last student had gone home. He never spoke much, just nodded politely when greeted and focused entirely on his work. To the young, brash students like Kyle, Marcus was just part of the furniture—a silent fixture meant to keep their pristine training ground spotless.

It was a Friday evening, and the atmosphere in the dojo was looser than usual. The Head Instructor, Sensei Tanaka, was running late from a meeting, leaving the senior belts in charge of the warm-ups and light sparring. Kyle, feeling particularly emboldened by his recent promotion, was holding court among a group of lower belts, recounting a match he had won the previous weekend with exaggerated flair.

"It's all about anticipation," Kyle boasted, demonstrating a flashy spinning hook kick that sliced through the air. "You have to read their body language before they even move. Most guys, they telegraph everything. It's too easy."

His audience nodded appreciatively, murmuring their admiration. Kyle's gaze drifted across the room and landed on Marcus, who was meticulously wringing out his mop into a yellow bucket near the entrance. A mischievous, cruel spark ignited in Kyle's eyes. He nudged his friend, a brown belt named Jason.

"Hey, watch this," Kyle whispered, a smirk playing on his lips.

He strutted over to where Marcus was working, his bare feet slapping softly against the wood. The group of lower belts followed behind him like ducklings, eager to see what their idol was up to.

"Hey, Marcus," Kyle called out, his tone dripping with condescension. "You missed a spot over there."

Marcus paused, leaning on his mop handle. He looked at the spot Kyle pointed to, then back at the young man. "I'll get to it, Kyle. Just finishing this section first." His voice was deep, calm, and resonant, like a cello playing a low note.

"You know, Marcus," Kyle continued, stepping onto the training mat and motioning for the older man to join him. "You've been watching us train for, what, ten years? You must have picked up something by now. How about a little friendly spar? Just as a joke."

The lower belts snickered. Jason crossed his arms, grinning. "Yeah, Marcus. Show us what you got. Kyle promises to go easy on you."

Marcus didn't move. His expression remained impassive. "I'm just here to clean, Kyle. I don't know anything about fighting."

"Oh, come on!" Kyle taunted, stepping closer. "Don't be a coward. It'll be fun. I won't even use my hands. Just kicks. Just for one minute. Let's see if you can even touch me."

The noise in the dojo began to die down as other students noticed the commotion. A crowd was slowly forming around them. Some looked uncomfortable, realizing that Kyle was crossing a line, but no one stepped forward to intervene. The bystander effect was in full swing, and Kyle was reveling in the attention.

"Look, Kyle, I have work to do," Marcus said, his voice remaining remarkably steady. He turned back to his bucket.
