Graham sighed.

“Look, kid. Fundamentals is Tuesday.”

“I can wait.”

“Just stay out of the way.”

Holland nodded.

Trent looked over.

He grinned.

“Don't worry, Sensei. I'll protect her.”

Laughter.

Holland lowered her eyes.

She had learned to recognize that kind of laughter.

It wasn't amusement.

It was testing.

They were trying to discover whether she would react.

She didn't.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then Trent's training partner left the mat to answer a phone call.

Trent looked around.

“Sensei, I need somebody to hold pads.”

Graham glanced toward Holland.

“Grab the new girl.”

Trent smiled.

“Seriously?”

“Light drills.”

Trent picked up the mitts.

He walked over.

“Come on, white belt.”

He tossed one toward her.

It struck her chest.

She caught it.

“Hold them at head height.”

Holland raised them.

“Don't be nervous.”

“I'm not.”

His smile widened.

“Sure.”

He threw a jab.

Smack.

Cross.

Smack.

Holland absorbed the force through her stance.

He noticed.

“Higher.”

She raised the pads.

Another combination.

Then another.

Trent increased the power.

Holland remained stable.

His face tightened.

He threw a hook.

Hard.

The mitt absorbed it.

Holland shifted slightly.

“Brace yourself,” he said.

She said nothing.

Then he kicked.

His leg swung hard toward the pad.

Holland read it instantly.

The kick came with too much force.

She planted her feet.

The impact bounced off.

Trent stumbled.

The room went quiet.

Holland lowered the mitts.

Trent stared at her.

“What was that?”

“I held them.”

“You moved.”

“No.”

His face reddened.

“Again.”

Holland raised the mitts.

This time his punches came faster.

Harder.

His breathing became rough.

His technique became worse.

Holland noticed everything.

The rising shoulder.

The open hip.

The shifting weight.

The fatigue.

She could have embarrassed him.

She didn't.

Until he threw an overhand right.

It wasn't aimed at the mitt.

It came toward her head.

Holland moved too late.

The glove clipped the top of her ear.

Pain flashed through her skull.

The room gasped.

Trent lowered his hand.

“Oops.”

Holland touched her ear.

Graham finally looked up.

“Control, Trent.”

“He moved into it.”

Holland stared at him.

Graham looked away.

Something inside her changed.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something colder.

She dropped the mitts.

They landed on the mat.

Trent laughed.

“What's wrong?”

Holland slowly straightened.

Her shoulders settled.

Her chin lowered.

Her breathing became quiet.

The posture of the nervous beginner disappeared.

Trent stopped smiling.

Holland raised her hands.

“I'm not holding pads anymore.”

“You don't quit until class ends.”

“I'm not quitting.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“You want to spar?”

The room fell silent.

Trent stared at her.

Then smiled.

“Sure.”

Graham didn't intervene.

And that was his mistake.

Because nobody in that room knew who Holland Wright really was.

Not yet.

 Ten Seconds

Trent stepped forward.

“You sure?”

Holland nodded.

He smiled.

“You're going to regret this.”

Holland heard Sensei Morita's voice in her head.

Her old instructor had taught her that arrogance usually announces itself before the body does.

Watch the shoulders.

Watch the feet.

Watch the eyes.

People tell you what they intend to do before they do it.

Trent's left shoulder lifted.

His weight shifted.

Holland knew the hook was coming.

He swung.

She stepped forward instead of backward.

His fist passed behind her head.

Before he could recover, Holland struck his lead thigh with a low kick.

The sound echoed.

Trent's leg buckled.

His eyes widened.

He caught himself with one hand.

Nobody laughed.

Holland reset.

Her hands remained high.

Her breathing was slow.

Trent stood.

His face had changed.

He wasn't embarrassed anymore.

He was angry.

He charged.

His right hand came forward.

Holland slipped inside.

His punch missed.

She stepped closer.

Too close for his long arms to work.

Her left hand drove into his body.

A short hook.

Precise.

Controlled.

Trent froze.

Holland immediately knew she had landed correctly.

His hands dropped.

She could have hit him again.

She didn't.

Instead, she stepped back.

Trent's knees gave way.

He collapsed onto the mat.

The room was completely silent.

Graham rushed forward.

“What did you do?”

Holland looked at him.

“He attacked me.”

“You're a white belt!”

Holland pointed toward her ear.

“He hit me before that.”

Graham opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Trent rolled onto his side.

He tried to breathe.

The pain was intense but temporary.

Holland knew that.

“Give him space,” she said.

Graham stared.

“How do you know?”

She didn't answer.

One of the blue belts whispered:

“She knows what she's doing.”

Another student nodded.

“I've never seen a white belt move like that.”

Holland untied the belt.

She removed the borrowed gi.

Underneath was a gray T-shirt.

She folded the gi.

Then placed it beside the mitts.

“I'm leaving.”

Graham looked at her.

“You can't just—”

“Yes, I can.”

She walked away.

No one stopped her.

Outside, the air was humid.

The parking lot smelled of rain and asphalt.

Holland's mother was waiting in the car.

She lowered the window.

“Well?”

Holland opened the door.

“Did you hit something?”

Holland sat down.

“Yeah.”

“Feel better?”

Holland looked through the window.

“No.”

Her mother started the car.

Neither spoke.

Inside Coastal Athletics, Graham remained beside Trent.

Eventually, Trent sat up.

He looked around.

Nobody was laughing.

That bothered him more than the pain.

“What the hell was she?”

Graham didn't answer.

That night, he watched the security footage.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He expected to see an out-of-control child.

Instead, he saw a trained fighter.

He saw Holland absorb the first attacks without retaliation.

He saw her hesitate after the illegal strike.

He saw her choose.

Then he saw ten seconds.

Ten seconds that changed the entire room.
