Richard looked at Maya.

His eyes lingered.

Then his face settled into professional politeness.

“Ma'am, I'm afraid there has been a misunderstanding.”

“I agree.”

“We are fully booked.”

Maya pointed toward the dining room.

“You have six empty tables.”

“Reserved.”

“My reservation?”

“Not in our system.”

Maya held up her phone.

“Confirmed.”

Richard didn't look at the screen.

“I'm afraid we cannot accommodate you.”

Maya checked her watch.

8:05.

Her business partner was supposed to arrive at 8:15.

She had ten minutes.

Ten minutes was enough.

“Mr. Whitmore,” she said, “before I leave, I'd like to ask you one question.”

“Certainly.”

“Do you know who you're speaking to?”

Richard laughed.

“Ma'am, I don't care if you're Oprah Winfrey.”

Several diners looked up.

“This is my restaurant.”

Maya smiled.

Not widely.

Just enough.

“No,” she said.

“It isn't.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

Maya stepped backward.

“Three minutes.”

“Three minutes until what?”

She didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the door.

Richard called after her.

“And don't come back.”

Maya stopped.

She turned around.

For the first time that evening, she smiled genuinely.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes?”

“You're absolutely right.”

She opened the door.

“After tonight, this restaurant will never serve people like me again.”

Then she walked outside.

Behind her, Brittany laughed.

Derek laughed.

Richard smiled.

They believed they had won.

They had no idea that the ownership transfer had already begun.

 The Acquisition

The black Escalade waited at the curb.

Maya stepped onto the sidewalk.

The city noise returned immediately.

Cars.

Taxis.

Voices.

Music from a bar across the street.

She stood beneath the restaurant's golden sign and checked her watch.

8:09 p.m.

A rear door of the Escalade opened.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out.

James Morrison.

Senior partner at Morrison & Associates.

One of Manhattan's most respected corporate attorneys.

He carried a leather portfolio.

“Right on time,” he said.

Maya nodded.

“Is everything finalized?”

James handed her the portfolio.

“Signed at 8:05.”

She opened it.

There it was.

The acquisition agreement.

The transfer documents.

The ownership certificate.

The wire confirmation.

Everything.

The purchase price:

$4.7 million.

The ownership entity:

Maya Hospitality Group.

Effective time:

8:05 p.m.

Maya closed the portfolio.

Inside the restaurant, Richard Whitmore was laughing with Derek.

They were already telling the story.

The difficult customer.

The fake reservation.

The woman who refused to leave.

Maya watched through the glass.

“Ready?” James asked.

Maya looked at the clock.

8:10.

“Give them one more minute.”

James smiled.

“Cruel.”

“Educational.”

At table twelve, Zara was still live.

Her viewer count had reached 2,400.

She had stopped eating.

She simply watched.

The comments were moving too fast.

Then someone posted:

WHO IS SHE?

Another:

SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE KNOWS SOMETHING.

Another:

THAT MAN IN THE SUIT IS A LAWYER.

Zara zoomed in.

Maya and James were standing outside.

“Okay,” Zara whispered.

“Something else is happening.”

Maya finally turned toward the entrance.

“Let's go.”

James opened the door.

They entered.

The room became silent.

Brittany looked up.

Her smile disappeared.

Derek froze.

Richard turned.

“You.”

Maya stopped at the hostess station.

The exact place where the reservation had been torn apart.

Richard walked toward her.

“I told you not to come back.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Maya looked at James.

James opened his portfolio.

“Mr. Whitmore, my name is James Morrison.”

Richard frowned.

“I know who you are.”

“Good.”

James removed a document.

“Then you should understand what this is.”

Richard stared at the papers.

“What?”

“The completed acquisition agreement for Meridian Prime.”

Richard laughed.

“This restaurant isn't for sale.”

“It was.”

“When?”

“Eight-oh-five.”

Richard's face changed.

Maya checked her watch.

8:11.

“Six minutes ago.”

Derek stepped forward.

“This is insane.”

James held up the documents.

“Would you like to verify the state filing?”

Richard grabbed the paper.

His hands began to shake.

He read.

Then read again.

The ownership entity had changed.

The property had been transferred.

The operating company was now controlled by Maya Hospitality Group.

“No.”

His voice was barely audible.

“No.”

Maya stepped closer.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

He looked at her.

“You're fired.”

The words hit harder than shouting could have.

Richard stared.

“You can't fire me.”

“I own the company.”

“I've worked here twelve years.”

“And now your employment has ended.”

“You planned this.”

Maya didn't deny it.

“I planned an acquisition.”

“You set me up.”

“No.”

She looked around the restaurant.

“You showed me who you were.”

Richard's face reddened.

“This is revenge.”

Maya shook her head.

“Revenge would have been walking away.”

She pointed toward the torn reservation.

“This is business.”

Brittany suddenly spoke.

“But... you're Black.”

The room went completely silent.

Maya looked at her.

“Yes.”

Brittany swallowed.

Maya smiled slightly.

“I'm also the CEO of Maya Hospitality Group.”

She placed a business card on the hostess station.

Brittany stared at it.

MAYA THOMPSON

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

MAYA HOSPITALITY GROUP

Beneath it:

47 RESTAURANTS

Brittany's face drained of color.

Derek stepped backward.

Richard whispered:

“That's impossible.”

James calmly placed another document on the counter.

“Wire transfer confirmation. Four point seven million dollars.”

Then another.

“Corporate registration.”

Then another.

“Operational transfer.”

Zara's phone captured every second.

Her livestream passed three thousand viewers.

Someone in the dining room started clapping.

One person.

Then another.

Maya raised her hand.

The applause stopped.

She wasn't finished.

She turned toward Carlos.

“Carlos.”

The young guard straightened.

“Yes, ma'am?”

“Effective immediately, you're the acting head of security for this location.”

Carlos blinked.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“What about Mike?”

Maya looked toward the senior guard.
