"Security—!" Julianna demanded, her voice sharp and trembling with anger. "Where is security?! Get him out of here!"

Two heavy-set security guards in black suits moved quickly from the side exits, stepping into the aisle to intercept the child.

"Don't touch him!"

The command didn't come from the guards, nor from Arthur Ashford. It came from Daniel.

Daniel’s voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, raw authority that froze the guards in their tracks. Daniel hadn't moved an inch from the altar. He stood frozen, staring down the aisle at the approaching boy. His heart, which had been beating with a slow, dull rhythm for six long years, suddenly hammered against his ribs like a trapped beast.

The boy reached the steps of the altar. He was breathless, his tiny body trembling violently from exhaustion and sheer terror. He looked up at Daniel with wide, luminous hazel eyes—eyes framed by long, dark lashes.

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs entirely. Those eyes. He knew those eyes. He had seen them in his dreams every single night for six years.

The boy swallowed hard, his little hands trembling as he reached into the pocket of his oversized coat.

"My mom said..." the boy panted, his small voice echoing clearly off the high stone walls. "Give you this. Today."

The boy reached out his small, dirty hand and dropped an object into Daniel’s open palm.

It was a small silver bracelet.

It was tarnished slightly around the edges, cold from the outside air, and heavy. As Daniel looked down at it, the sunlight caught the worn metal surface, illuminating a delicate hand-drawn engraving on the inside band:

“For my sun – Daniel.”

The world around Daniel vanished.

The organ, the towering stained-glass windows, the smell of white lilies, Julianna’s sharp breathing, the two hundred wealthy guests staring in stunned silence—it all dissolved into a cold, black abyss. The only thing that existed was the cold silver metal resting against his trembling palm.

Daniel’s thumb slowly brushed across the worn letters. He had bought that bracelet nine years ago in a small, dusty artisan shop in Florence, Italy. He had saved three months of his meager salary as an intern architect just to afford it. He remembered the exact evening he had clasped it around her slender wrist while they sat on the steps of the Piazzale Michelangelo, watching the golden sun set over the Tuscan hills.

He remembered her soft laugh. He remembered the way her dark hair smelled of jasmine. He remembered her voice promising him that as long as she wore it, they would never truly be apart.

“You are my sunlight, Daniel,”she had whispered that night, resting her head against his shoulder. “Even in the dark, you show me where to go.”

Daniel’s fingers trembled so violently he almost dropped the bracelet. A cold, suffocating wave of nausea crashed over him.

"D-Daniel?" Julianna’s voice broke the silence, her tone laced with a mixture of mounting confusion and rising anger. She stepped closer, eyeing the dirty child with deep revulsion. "Who is this child? What is going on? Tell security to clear him out so we can finish the ceremony!"

Daniel didn't hear her. He didn't look at her.

He slowly sank to his knees right there on the marble steps, uncaring that his expensive trousers were grinding against the floor. He brought himself down to the boy's eye level. Up close, Daniel could see the child’s tear-stained cheeks, the faint smudges of dirt near his jaw, and the subtle, unmistakable shape of his chin. It was his own chin.

"Where..." Daniel’s voice cracked, sounding broken and ruined. He swallowed hard, his throat feeling as dry as ashes. "...Where did you get this?"

The boy wiped his nose with the back of his dirty sleeve, struggling to stay brave beneath the intense stare of the tall man before him.

"She gave it to me this morning," the boy whispered, his voice trembling. "She said... she said you’d know who she was."

Daniel felt as though his chest were being crushed under an unbearable hydraulic press. The air in the cathedral felt heavy, suffocating, poisoned by years of lies he had told himself.

"...Elena," Daniel breathed, the name torn from his lungs like a bloodied feather.

The moment the name left his lips, the boy’s hazel eyes welled up with fresh, glistening tears. He nodded quickly.

"That’s my mom," the boy said softly.

A loud, audible gasp rippled through the front rows of pews. Arthur Ashford, Julianna’s father, stood up abruptly, his face turning an angry crimson color.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur boomed, his voice shaking the quiet space. "Daniel! Who is this woman? Explain yourself!"

Julianna took another step back, her hands shaking as she looked from Daniel’s kneeling form to the boy. Her carefully constructed facade of aristocratic composure was crumbling into sheer horror. "Daniel... look at me. Who is Elena?"

Daniel didn't look at Arthur. He didn't look at Julianna. The whispers in the room grew louder, a buzzing swarm of hornets, but Daniel was deaf to them all. His entire soul was focused entirely on the small, trembling boy standing before him.
