He had no idea who she really was.
And within hours, the entire world would know his name.
The Woman Behind the Uniform
Six hours earlier, at 6:02 a.m., a Honda Civic rolled into the underground garage beneath Blackwell Financial Tower.
Janelle Winters turned off the engine.
For several seconds, she remained in the darkness.
The garage was cold and almost empty.
She could hear water dripping somewhere in the distance.
Janelle opened the trunk.
Inside was a navy cleaning uniform.
She changed in the basement locker room beneath buzzing fluorescent lights.
Then she removed her blazer and hung it inside her locker.
Behind the blazer, hidden beneath several cleaning rags, was a leather folder.
The label read:
BLACKWELL FINANCIAL — EVIDENCE
Janelle didn't open it.
Not yet.
On the shelf above the locker sat three textbooks.
Corporate Law.
Financial Fraud Detection.
Executive Leadership.
A tablet was tucked between them.
Its screen contained months of financial records.
Offshore transactions.
Suspicious transfers.
Unreported accounts.
Janelle had spent six months gathering evidence.
She wasn't really a cleaner.
She was an attorney.
And she was working undercover.
Maria Alvarez, an older cleaner who had worked in the building for twenty years, entered the locker room.
“You're early again.”
Janelle smiled.
“Old habit.”
“Still doing that night-school thing?”
“Almost finished.”
Maria laughed.
“What kind of school project requires you to arrive at six in the morning?”
“The thorough kind.”
Maria smiled.
She didn't ask another question.
That was why Janelle liked her.
At 6:30, Janelle entered the lobby.
By 8:00, she was already working.
By 8:47, she would be standing beneath a shower of filthy water.
But what Harrison didn't know was that every camera in that lobby was recording.
And Janelle had been waiting six months for him to reveal himself.
The Empire Starts Cracking
While Janelle worked below, Harrison was fighting for his company upstairs.
At 8:04 a.m., Michael Chen had called him.
“Twelve million dollars,” Chen said. “Hidden offshore.”
“There has to be an explanation.”
“There is. Your company concealed it.”
Harrison's stomach tightened.
“Give me forty-eight hours.”
“You have forty-eight hours to provide documentation.”
“And if I can't?”
“You already know the answer.”
The call ended.
Harrison immediately contacted his accountant.
No answer.
His attorney.
Voicemail.
His chief compliance officer finally picked up.
“Sir…”
“What?”
“The SEC sent a request yesterday.”
Harrison froze.
“What kind of request?”
“They want three years of quarterly reports.”
