“Let’s get one thing straight, Margaret,” Evan said, his tone dripping with patronizing condescension. “This is our house. Emily is my wife. And my mother is a welcome guest in our home. You walking in here uninvited, playing the martyr, and whispering secret little codewords like some delusional spy in a bad movie isn't going to change the hierarchy here.”

“Hierarchy,” I murmured, tasting the word on my tongue like spoiled milk.

“Yes, hierarchy,” Gloria chimed in, leaning forward, resting her sharp elbows on the table. “Evan is the head of this household. He manages operations at Hartwell Dining, he brings home the status, and Emily’s only job is to support him and raise our grandchild. Honestly, Margaret, your generation ruined the traditional family structure by teaching young women they could have careers and independence. Look at what it did to Emily. She’s falling apart because she tried to be strong.”

I looked down at Lily. The little girl had finally stopped crying, her eyelids heavy, her warm breath puffing softly against my collarbone. Then I looked past Gloria’s painted face, past the crystal wine glasses, past the gleaming silver cutlery, straight out the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows into the driveway.

Parked in the three-car garage were three vehicles: Evan’s German sports sedan, Gloria’s luxury crossover, and Emily’s sensible family SUV.

Every single one of them was registered under the Hartwell Family Trust.

Every gallon of gas in their tanks had been billed to corporate expense accounts.

And the house—the four-thousand-square-foot architectural showpiece in this gated Cherry Hills enclave—sat entirely on land owned by the trust, protected by strict legal covenants that I had personally drafted with Daniel Cho twenty years ago, long before Emily was even born.

Evan and Gloria were guests playing king and queen in a castle built of glass, standing atop a foundation made entirely of my money, my labor, and my foresight. And they were entirely, blissfully ignorant of the fact that the tide was already going out.
