Nathan’s face changed.
“She’s my daughter,” he said. “And she was scared.”
Patricia laughed bitterly from inside. “She was fine until you arrived.”
Emma trembled against his shoulder.
That was all Nathan needed.
He carried his daughter down the porch steps and toward his truck parked beneath the maple tree.
As he buckled Emma into her booster seat, she held the teddy bear tighter.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “Grandma said if I cried, you wouldn’t be allowed to come anymore.”
Nathan froze.
The night air suddenly felt colder.
He looked back at the glowing house, where silhouettes shifted behind lace curtains.
Then he shut the truck door gently, walked around to the driver’s side, and got in.
