“Since you clearly don’t trust this family,” my father repeated, his voice carrying the calm weight of a judge passing sentence, “you can pack your things and leave this house by noon.”

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. I didn't gasp. I didn't cry. My hands, resting against the sides of my tailored skirt, did not shake. Grandfather Robert had warned me about moments like this. When a Kingsley loses control over you, Evie, he had told me on his deathbed, they will try to make you feel like you no longer exist.

“On what grounds, Father?” I asked, keeping my voice entirely neutral.

“Insolence,” Cynthia snapped, dropping her napkin onto her untouched plate. Her face contorted into something ugly, stripping away the polite socialite facade. “Calculated disrespect! You sat there at your eighteen-year-old party, letting our friends think we raised a lovely young woman, while behind our backs you treated us like thieves! You went to Nora Whitman behind our backs!”

“Nora Whitman was Grandfather’s lawyer,” I said quietly. “And the three million dollars was left to me. Not to Kingsley Enterprises. Not to Grant’s venture capital fund. To me.”

Julian took two slow steps toward me. The warmth he had displayed for the cameras at the Graystone Hotel twelve hours ago was entirely gone. “That money was intended to be integrated into the family trust to secure our credit lines for the Riverfront Development project. You knew that, Evelyn. We discussed it weeks ago.”
