Mark was standing on the frost-covered welcome mat in his socks, his expensive wineglass trembling in his hand. The screen of his phone was glowing with a harsh, glaring white light, displaying a notification he never expected to see—an urgent system alert from the corporate servers of Vance Global Logistics, the multi-million-dollar shipping empire our father had spent forty years building, and the exact company where Mark served as executive vice president while I worked as its senior forensic compliance auditor.

“Claire!” Mark shouted, his voice cracking on the syllable as he took a desperate step down onto the frozen concrete driveway barefoot. “What did you just do? The board portal is locked! All operational transfers have been frozen by federal compliance! Dad’s corporate accounts are flashing red across every regional node!”

I turned slowly, keeping one hand resting gently on Lily’s shoulder. She looked up at me with big, tear-filled eyes, her little mittens gripping my coat.

“You said the holiday was better without us, Mark,” I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal calm that cut straight through the frigid wind. “You told us not to come back. So I just made sure we’d never have to set foot in this house—or any of Dad’s properties—ever again.”
