"No," I agreed. "But you are required, I'd imagine, to explain to these officers exactly how you knew to find your ex-wife and children at this particular hotel, at this particular hour, given that she tells me she's been staying nowhere near here for the past two days."

The taller officer, whose name tag read Reyes, glanced sharply between us. "Sir, that's actually a fair question. Mr. Voss, how did you know to come here tonight?"

Voss's composure cracked slightly. "I have — I have people who monitor her, for the children's safety."

"You've had my staff followed," I said, understanding dawning with a cold clarity that made my earlier hesitation about the entire situation vanish completely. "Anna Silva is an employee of the Wellington Grand Hotel. If you've had a private investigator tracking her movements without her knowledge, Mr. Voss, we're no longer discussing a simple welfare check. We're discussing stalking."

"That's not—" Voss started.

"Officer Reyes," I said, turning fully toward the two officers now, my voice settling into the clear, commanding register I used for board meetings, "Anna Silva is a Wellington Grand employee who was in this hotel tonight in her professional capacity, on shift, with her children resting in a designated staff accommodation area with my full knowledge and authorization. If you'd like to verify the children's welfare directly, I'm happy to arrange that. But I want it clearly understood, on the record, that this welfare check appears to have originated from a man who has apparently been monitoring his ex-wife's movements through unauthorized surveillance."
