Then she looked toward Gloria.

“You can keep the food, of course. Don’t let it go to waste.”

No one spoke.

A chair scraped across the concrete.

Then another.

Guests began gathering purses, coats, and children. Some avoided our eyes. Others offered quick goodbyes that sounded more uncomfortable than sincere.

Gloria stood in the kitchen doorway holding a clean dish towel, her gaze fixed on the empty backyard. Steam was still rising from the trays of roasted chicken and peach cobbler, but the voices, laughter, and footsteps were completely gone. The quiet that settled over our small Chicago property wasn't peaceful; it felt like a heavy, suffocating weight.

Seeing her stand there—exhausted, burnt, discarded by her own son and daughter-in-law—ignited a cold, sharp flame inside my chest.

"Hank," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We should put the lids on the trays so the food doesn't go cold."

"Gloria," I said softly, stepping closer and taking the dish towel from her trembling hands. "Look at me."

She looked up. Her eyes were bloodshot from two days without sleep, dark circles hollowed out beneath her lower lids.
