And Owen had explained them away because accepting the truth would have required him to admit that the people who raised him were capable of making his daughter feel unwanted.

He had chosen comfort over clarity.

Lily had paid for it.

Owen stood.

“Dry your hands.”

She watched him carefully.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

His voice changed.

The softness remained, but beneath it was something firmer.

Something final.

“You are not in trouble.”

He took a clean dish towel, dried each of her fingers, then rolled down the sleeves of her dress.

“Come with me.”

Lily hesitated.

“Grandma said I have to finish.”

Owen lifted her into his arms.

“You’re finished.”

He carried her into the living room.

The conversation slowed as they entered.

Lauren was kneeling near the tree with her phone in her hand. Madison and Harper sat surrounded by presents. Owen’s mother, Eleanor, stood behind the sofa arranging the children into position.

“There you are,” Eleanor said, with a smile that appeared too quickly. “Lily, sweetheart, the kitchen still needs—”

“No,” Owen said.

The single word silenced the room.

His father, Richard, looked up from the armchair.
